Black woman creates headbands that keep your wig secure and promote hair growth

A 25-year-old Black British woman has created a groundbreaking silicone headband that secures your wig, protects your scalp and promotes natural hair growth underneath.

The Wig Fix is the first wig innovation in 55 years, and people who wear wigs say it is a complete game-changer.

The silicone headband is a universal size, it works with all full wigs, and can be worn on heads with or without bio hair.

The new collection from The Wig Fix consists of shades: Fair, Medium, Tan and Deep.

With more than eight million women in the UK experiencing hair loss, linked to illness and side effects from medications, and many other people wearing wigs for cultural reasons or to experiment with different styles, wigs are becoming more popular than ever.

In fact, wigs are estimated to become a £5 billion global industry by 2024.

Creator Aasiyah Abdulsalam, says her inspiration stems from the constant development and innovation of the beauty industry.

‘I want that to be translated into the wig industry – which hasn’t seen product inventions (until the Wig Fix) for 60 years,’ Aasiyah tells Metro.co.uk.

‘I wrote my undergraduate dissertation about the wig industry. I knew the sourcing and distribution methods were super unethical and complicated, and I wanted to explore that further with formal research.

‘By the time I submitted it, I was obsessed and so confused as to why such an expansive and creative industry could have so little development over the years. The last major invention in the wig industry was the ventilation technique created in the 19th century in Paris – seriously.

‘I wrote down a list of ideas that I thought could solve the numerous pain points in the industry. Then finally in 2018, I had the most awful wig experience in Las Vegas. The heat, wig glue and grips were an awful mix and that was the final push I needed to actually start creating these products.’

Aasiyah said it was really important to her to create a product that not only secured a wig in place but also helped to stimulate natural hair growth for the wearer.

‘Usually, it was sacrificing one for the other, and now there’s a cohesive and sustainable solution,’ she explains.

‘We are disrupting the wig industry by introducing innovative, never-before-seen, proprietary products to the industry that finally have a focus on functionality, design and customer experience.

‘I want our product and all of its benefits to be accessible to wig wearers everywhere.’

How does The Wig Fix work?

When the band is compressed onto the scalp, it creates a micro-climate between the skin and the silicone. This closed, healing environment is called occlusion by doctors and scientists. Occlusion allows for the moisture from the skin to draw up the surface layer, creating a protective barrier for the scalp and existing hair.

They also use a silicone design which uses gentle and comfortable compression against the scalp, and it is automatically activated when worn. This causes blood flow to increase, encouraging thicker natural hair growth over time.

As the band is compressed to the scalp, there is no need to have hair there in the first place to attach to.

When worn, it is completely hidden by the wig, and the silicone is water repellent and heat-dissipating, so sweat and moisture won’t affect its gripping qualities.
