CBBC star Mya-Lecia Naylor, 16, died by hanging after ‘exam stress’, inquest hears

CBBC star Mya-Lecia Naylor, 16, died after hanging herself at her family home in London, an inquest has heard.

The TV star, who appeared on shows such as Almost Never and Millie Inbetween, died in April of this year.

At an inquest into her death today, a coroner ruled that the actress died by misadventure after hanging herself at her family home.

South London coroner Toby Watkin told an inquest that Mya-Lecia died on April 7 after emergency services were called to her family home at 10am to reports of a teenage girl in cardiac arrest.

She was tragically pronounced at 11.30am at Croydon University Hospital.

Mya-Lecia had been due to sit her GCSE’s, with her father Martin Naylor telling South London Coroner’s Court that she had been “stressed” about the exams.

He said: “She had not been her normal self … she was stressed about her exams.

“She knew she needed to get on with her revision and she had plans scheduled out for her revision.”

He added: “I honestly believe she was just making some sort of point. I genuinely believe she did not mean to do it. It was a silly spur of the moment thing. She clearly had plans for the future.”

Assistant Coroner Toby Watkin concluded that Mya-Lecia “did not intend to end her own life” and concluded that her death was by misadventure.

A toxicology report confirmed no evidence of drugs or alcohol in Mya-Lecia’s system at the time of her death.

At the time of her death the BBC said in a statement: “We are so sorry to have to tell you that Mya-Lecia, who you will know from Millie Inbetween and Almost Never has, very sadly, died.

“Mya-Lecia was a much loved part of the BBC Children’s family, and a hugely talented actress, singer and dancer. We will miss her enormously and we are sure that you will want to join us in sending all our love to her family and friends.”

Her representatives, A&J Management, said: “It is with the deepest sorrow we have to announce that on Sunday 7th April Mya-Lecia Naylor, very sadly, died.

“Mya-Lecia was hugely talented and a big part of A&J, we will miss her greatly. Our love and thoughts are with all her family and friends at this difficult time.”

I’m A Celebrity star Emily Atack, who appeared with Mya-Lecia on Almost Never, also paid tribute to the teenager, writing: “So shocked and sad to hear about lovely Mya-Lecia Naylor.
