Former EastEnders star, Paul Nicholls, 42, believes that if he doesn’t combat his drug addiction, he fears he may die. The actor has publicly spoken of his previous days which saw him not sleep for “three or four days”.

At certain points I’d be gone for three or four days and not sleep at all, I stopped caring, I pressed the ‘f*** it’ button.

Paul who played Joe Wicks in the BBC soap until he departed Albert Square in 1997 has been attempting to combat his addiction over recent years.

Speaking candidly about his battle, Paul revealed that last year, he struggled and relapsed, admitting he wouldn’t sleep for several days at a time.

The Ackley Bridge actor admits he felt “shame” and believed he would die if he didn’t stop taking drugs.

Speaking in a recent interview, he said: “I’ve had addiction issues before and relapsed last year.”

He went on to tell The Sun: “The rabbit hole I went down led to places that I never thought I’d end up in — in flats with people that I didn’t know.

“Every time I relapsed cocaine is always present.

“At certain points, I’d be gone for three or four days and not sleep at all. I stopped caring, I pressed the ‘f*** it’ button.”

The Bolton-born star says that he “ended up in a flat” and was “smoking stuff, doing this and doing that,” with people he didn’t know.

“They recognised me. I was looking around and I thought, ‘If I don’t stop, I will die’.

“I’ve still got so much shame around this stuff.”

Over the past few months, Paul has been attempting to turn his life around and attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings to combat his addiction.

Paul whose real name is Paul Greenhalgh says that he has never recovered from a horrific incident in Thailand back in 2017, during which, he was trapped under a waterfall for three nights.

The actor joined EastEnders aged just 16 but left a year after bursting onto the scenes, claiming he was suffering from depression as well as problems with alcohol and drugs.

During the early days of his career, Paul was voted as televisions sexiest actor on two occasions as well as gracing the cover of several magazine front pages.

Since leaving Walford, he has gone on to land roles in Law and Order: UK, Holby City, Bridget Jones and Ackley Bridge.

However, in recent years, he has kept himself out of the limelight as he went through a divorce and battled addiction.
