Grey's Anatomy: Ellen Pompeo stars as Meredith Grey

Ellen Pompeo, 51, had a furious row with fellow actor Denzel Washington, 66, on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. In 2016, the actress had an argument with the film star, who at the time was directing an episode of the hit ABC medical drama.

Ellen told fans about the incident in an episode of her new podcast Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo.

She claimed Denzel “went ham” on her when she began to improvise during a scene.

The episode, titled The Sound Of Silence, showed her character, Meredith Grey, being attacked by a patient.

Ellen explained: “I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologise, look at me’.

“And that wasn’t in the dialogue. And Denzel went ham on my ass.

“He was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do.’”

But Ellen did not appreciate the director’s words and hit back at him.

She added: “I was like, ‘Listen, motherf****r, this is my show.

“This is my set. Who are you telling?”

However, years have passed since the incensed exchange and the mum-of-three now clarifies that she has “utmost respect for him as an actor and director”.

The actress also stressed that she and Denzel have not since had irate arguments.

She continued: “So, we didn’t get through it without a fight, but that’s actors for you.

“Passionate and fiery and that’s where you get the magic, and that’s where you get the good stuff.

“So, it was an amazing experience, it really was.”

Ellen has been at the forefront of the show since it first aired in 2005.

She recently gave fans an insight into her personal life as she confessed her husband Chris Ivery found her kissing scenes “really hard” at the beginning.

She told Instyle’s Ladies First podcast: “We met in 2002, it was about six months before I did the pilot to Grey’s Anatomy, poor guy, he had no idea what he was getting into.

“I remember in the beginning it was really hard for him.

“He was like, ‘this is not what I signed up for. You’re kissing a guy you go to work and like, make out with that, I like Patrick and everything, he’s a good dude, but like, really? You actresses are nuts. Like I’m supposed to put up with this?’”

“It was a lot for him at first. He was really a trooper, I have to say.”
