How did Frances Tophill get into gardening?

Frances has previously spoken of how found her passion for the pastime “quite late”.

She explained: “I came to gardening quite late.

“Having had two failed attempts at the ages of six and seven when I tried to ‘help’ my mum and got in trouble, I never even thought about it again until I saw the job for an apprentice gardener at the age of 19, applied, turned up for the interview, had a walk around the garden and immediately knew it was what I wanted to do.”

She went on to say her passion for gardening has stayed with her.

Frances continued: “I luckily got the job and haven’t looked back since.”

The presenter has also spoken of how she got her gardening apprenticeship, saying she laughed off the idea after her mother suggested it.

Frances explained: “I remember lying in bed with the rain pouring down outside and thinking, ‘I want to go out in this.’

“I like being out in all weathers. It occurred to me that maybe the gardening thing wouldn’t be so mad after all. So I applied and got the job.

“The moment I saw the garden, I just fell in love with it. Straightaway I knew I’d found something I loved.

“I’d spent three years working at the same shop, then suddenly I was surrounded by these three-and-a-half acres that were different every day. It was so exciting.”

Before joining Gardeners’ World, Frances was seen alongside Alan Titchmarsh on Love Your Garden.

Frances has since opened up on how she was offered the opportunity while she was studying for her degree in Horticulture.

She said: “In regards to Love Your Garden, an email was sent to my college in Edinburgh, and a few of us were like let’s just go and see.

“So we all went to London on a trip and came back from the screen test, thinking that was really hard.”

Frances later spoke of how she was successful and worked alongside the completion of her degree.

She continued: “I was offered the job and just thought, I will see, I’ll try it.

“Luckily, the college was so accommodating, enabling me to work filming around studying.

“So, the last two years of college I was also filming at the same time which was quite full-on but worth it.”

Gardeners’ World continues tonight on BBC Two at 8pm.
