Jamie Redknapp jokes he’s moving into acting and ‘auditioning for Bodyguard’

Football pundit Jamie Redknapp has joked he's changing careers and "auditioning for a role on Bodyguard".

The former Liverpool and England international has quipped he should be given a cameo in the second series of the BBC drama, alongside Richard Madden.

While Jamie has only previously 'acted up to the cameras' in Sky One sports quiz A League Of Their Own, he kidded that he could pivot into acting after meeting actress Keeley Hawes at the TV BAFTAs on Sunday night.

Jamie often enjoys a joke and shares some banter on the sports quiz TV show but would have to keep a straight face on if he was to land a role in the hit drama.

This could be a problem for the 45-year-old who had his tongue firmly in his cheek when suggesting he could follow former footballers Eric Cantona and Vinnie Jones into an acting career.

Jamie joked that he could give star Richard Madden an run for his money on the small screen.

The dad-of-two posted a pic of him with Keeley on Instagram and wrote: “Auditioning for the new Bodyguard. Gotta be better than the other fella."

Jamie may have jumped the gun a bit though as despite Bodyguard being a huge ratings winner for the BBC, writer Jed Mercurio has not confirmed there will be a second series as yet.

Star of the show, Richard, confirmed that there was going to be a little time off before deciding whether to give viewers a second helping.

Richard said: "I spoke to Jed about a month after the show had finished airing over in the UK and we sat and decided: ‘Let’s give it at least a year while we work out how to do something better.’

“Me and Jed both agree that there’s something much more interesting in: ‘Let’s catch up with him 18 months later, two years later after this has happened and say, where is he now?’”

Jamie will have to hope that this early nudge might just get a role written in for him.
