Since stepping down from The One Show in 2020, Matt Baker, 43, has been plenty busy with his regular role on Countryfile and filming his latest series Our Farm in the Dales. But despite growing used to TV sets and film crews, the legendary presenter admitted he had to make a “tough decision” to allow cameras to follow his family’s story and at times, found it incredibly difficult.

The hardest part for me was filming her in that situation

The show follows Matt behind the scenes at his family’s remote, 100-acre sheep farm in the Durham hills, as he and his wife Nicola and their children Luke and Molly, moved back to help his parents out after his mum was knocked over by a flock of sheep.

Matt recalled his dad telling him of his mum’s accident, which led to her needing knee surgery.

“My dad told me that Mum had had an accident,” he remembered in a recent interview.

“We went straight back home.”

Matt added: “I’ve never felt the need to step away in the way I did after the accident.

“The last thing you want is to see your parents struggling, and Mum was very vulnerable.”

And he admitted that emotion sometimes got the better of him.

“The hardest part for me was filming her in that situation,” he told Radio Times of the four-part special.

“I’ve never seen her like that.”

While he ultimately moved back to support his parents, it was never his intention to create another rural farming show but low and behold, a new series was born.

“It was a big decision,” he admitted before revealing putting his children in the limelight was another decision they pondered long and hard over.

“My children have never been put in the public eye at all but they’re at the age now where they can make their own decisions.”

But taking on a huge working farm doesn’t come easy and Matt revealed they had to make some “big changes” in order to secure its future, but they seem to be on the right track now.

As well as capturing touching family moments including his mum’s recovery, the cameras follow all the adventures in the fields as the family pull together to continue its legacy.

Our Farm in the Dales begins on More 4 on Wednesday, 31st March at 9pm.
