Bill & Ted are back with another installment of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Yes, I’ll probably see it in the theaters, because if Hollywood is refusing to evolve past a bunch of teenage dumbos time traveling in a pay phone, then I refuse to evolve as well. Keanu Reeves went on Steven Colbert‘s show to discuss the upcoming movie, and while explaining the premises of the movie, things took an interesting/dark turn.
According to Vice:
The transcendent moment comes right at the tail end of the interview, while Reeves is explaining the plot of the new Bill & Ted movie and how the fate of the world rests on the duo’s ability to write one last Wyld Stallyns song. If they don’t, “it’s the end of the entire universe,” Reeves says. “It’s the end of the time-space continuum.”
“So you’re facing your own mortality and the mortality of all existence,” Colbert replies. “Wow.” And then, without warning, the host lobs an extremely heavy question straight at Reeves. And Keanu Reeves, being Keanu Reeves, belts that baby straight out of the park.
“What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?”
Keanu takes a beat, considering, then replies: “I know that the ones who love us will miss us.”
That was pretty profound answer. I half expected him to try and plug the movie and say we all get into a telephone booth and hope we land in the 1980’s where cocaine is cheap and you can pound a tab while watching that sassy lady’s “Where’s The Beef?” commercials.
Keanu’s answer is so simple and so beautiful that it even gives Steven pause for a few moments. Keanu has had his share tragic losses in his life. His daughter was stillborn in 1999. Then, according to Paper Magazine, his ex-girlfriend (and the mother of his stillborn baby), Jennifer Syme, died in a tragic car accident while trying to drive back to a party at Marylin Manson‘s house.
Even with all the tragedy he faced, Keanu has always had a sage and warm presence about him. Whether it’s because of the sad Keanu meme of 2018 or the paparazzi catching him doing Tai Chi in the park, Keanu has always felt like an old soul who just happens to say “woah” better than anyone else (yes, I’m looking at you Joey Lawrence). We can’t fault him for maximizing that talent in three installments of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I mean if god gives you a talent, you better damn well use it.
The sweet moment happens around the 9:40 mark.
