St. Vincent Shares Cover Of Disco Classic Funkytown

St. Vincent recently released a cover of the Lipps Inc. disco classic, “Funkytown,” which was recorded for the forthcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru soundtrack.

The original version of “Funkytown” appeared on Lipps Inc.’s 1979 debut album, Mouth to Mouth. The track peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The star-studded 19-song soundtrack album for Minions: The Rise Of Gru also features Phoebe Bridgers, Brockhampton and Jack Antonoff‘s band Bleachers. The full record is set to arrive on July 1 via Decca on the same day the film releases in theaters worldwide.

Minions: The Rise of Gru, which is set in the 1970s, tells the origin story of how Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, first met his iconic Minions.

In a statement on Instagram about the star-studded soundtrack, Antonoff wrote, “Proud to announce the soundtrack I made for Minions: The Rise of Gru. My favorite 70s songs performed by my favorite artists and an original I wrote with Sam Dew, Patrik Berger, and Kevin Parker performed by Diana Ross and Tame Impala called ‘Turn Up the Sunshine.’ Recording sessions for these were some of the most special and bizarre.”
