A DENTIST has shared information about the hidden dangers that could be lurking inside your toothbrush.
We use this innocuous-seeming object to clean our teeth twice a day – but it could be hiding all sorts of nasties.
The surprising information came from Dr Ellie Phillips (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@drelliephillips" target="_blank" aria-label="@
drelliephillips (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener">@
drelliephillips), a dentist and TikTok influencer.
Self-described as a "preventive dentist helping heal teeth naturally," she shares tips and facts about oral care with her 211,000 followers.
In a recent clip, she discussed what your toothbrush could be hiding and a simple trick that she uses to ensure it stays clean.
She said: "Toothbrushes get really dirty, especially when they're close to a toilet, in a damp climate, or in a place with high humidity, such as in your bathroom or shower.
"Humidity is the worst thing for growing molds and for allowing harmful bacteria to multiply inside the toothbrush bristles."
The dentist continued: "Here's what I want you to do to your toothbrush every single day to ensure that you have the best oral health possible.
"The only way to get rid of the bacteria which lives on and inside your toothbrush is to dry your toothbrush for 24 hours."
Dr Ellie recommended placing your brush in a cup or stand and allowing it to air dry for a full day.

She said: "If your bathroom is used often by other people or is especially damp, bring your toothbrush into the bedroom or kitchen and allow it to dry near a window in the sunshine."
The influencer also suggests using different toothbrushes in the morning and evening, to allow it to dry for 24 hours before being used again.
