A Body Language Expert Says Meghan Markle Was Suppressing 'Horrible Memories' During Her Interview With Oprah

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was extremely candid about her time as a senior working royal and what she endured during her time in the royal family.

Now, a body language expert is accessing the duchess’ body language as she reflected on her mental health during that time as she endured racism and a lack of support.

Meghan Markle’s interview was Oprah was very similar to Princess Diana’s infamous interview

Meghan revealing her experience as an outsider marrying into the British royal family certainly draws parallels to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. The princess gave a shocking interview of her own to BBC’s Martin Bashir just two years before her tragic death.

In Meghan’s interview, she revealed to Oprah that the royals’ lack of support coupled with the cruelty of the British media led to sucidial thoughts. “I just didn’t see a solution. … It was all happening just because I was breathing,” Meghan told Oprah. “I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially, because I know how much loss he’s suffered. But I knew if I didn’t say it, I’d do it.

Over 20 years ago, Princess Diana also discussed the toll that royal life took on her mental health. “When no one listens to you, or you feel no one’s listening to you, all sorts of things start to happen. For instance, you have so much pain inside yourself that you try and hurt yourself on the outside because you want help, but it’s the wrong help you’re asking for,” Diana told Bashir.

Meghan Markle revealed why she left the British royal family

In her interview with Oprah, Meghan explained that she felt silenced and a major lack of support from the British royal family. However, she explained that one of the main reasons she and Prince Harry decided that living their lives as senior working royals was unlivable was due to racism.

“If the source of information is inherently corrupt or racist or bias, then that filters out to the rest of society,” Prince Harry said of the U.K. press.

For her part, Meghan said she regretted believing the royal family would protect her. “I regret believing that because I think had I really seen that that wasn’t happening, I would have been able to do more,” she said. “But I think I wasn’t supposed to see it.”

Meghan Markle was suppressing ‘horrible memories according to a body language expert

As revelatory as Meghan’s discussion with Oprah was, she and Prince Harry also held back a ton, including the identity of the person who questioned them about Archie’s skin tone.

Body language expert and author Patti Wood give a thorough assessment of Meghan’s body language throughout the interview.

“She’s wistful. She’s looking off, she’s remembering. And there’s a part of her that smiles as she remembers, but there’s also tears in these eyes,” Wood told Marie Claire. “So it tells me she’s remembering all of it, all of the wedding, and there’s parts that she thinks of fondly, but there’s parts that make her cry. So it’s a complex set of emotions. And overall, she wants to contain and suppress the complexity of these emotions.”

Wood says the most challenging for Meghan was discussing her mental health struggles. “She’s trying to suppress the memories of that horrible time,” she said. “When she cried, they were real tears.”
