A former winner explains how he walked away with £32k by conquering our Selector game

Looking for some inspiration ahead of our new Dream Team Selector game starting on January 30th?

Back in November, Dane Pearce – a 29-year-old Logistics Manager from Maidstone – walked off with £32,865 having won Selector Game 2.

“For the first six or seven weeks, I was just picking teams that I didn’t think would be obvious choices,” he explained. “But that still had a really good chance of winning.”

“It wasn’t until we got down to the last few weeks that I thought I was going to start running out of picks. So I started looking forward a little bit, thinking two weeks ahead.”

Let’s take a look back at Dane’s path to glory.

Gameweek 1 – Leicester v West Brom (a)

Two late Jamie Vardy penalties give Brendan Rodgers’ men a comfortable opening day victory.

Gameweek 2 – Everton v West Brom (h)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin rattles in a hat-trick to take Dane through — notice how his early picks were determined just as much by West Brom’s form as that of the Foxes and the Toffees.

Gameweek 3 – Aston Villa v Fulham (a)

Struggling Fulham don’t put up much of a fight against a Jack Grealish-inspired Villa.

Gameweek 4 – Wolves v Fulham (h)

Dane picks teams up against Fulham in consecutive weeks and is rewarded by Pedro Neto’s drilled winner — sometimes it’s best to consider which team is in the worst form, rather than the best.

Gameweek 5 – Man United v Newcastle (a)

Bruno Fernandes carries his side to a heavy win over Newcastle.

Gameweek 6 – Liverpool v Sheff Utd (h)

A second-half Diogo Jota goal ensures Dane’s passage into round 7 — picking the likes of Wolves and Villa in earlier rounds allowed him to save heavy-hitters like the defending champions for when the pressure started to mount.

Gameweek 7 – Man City v Sheff Utd (a)

Kyle Walker gets the only goal of the game in the first half against his former club — again, many of Dane’s rivals will have already selected City by this stage.

Gameweek 8 – Spurs v West Brom (a)

Hairy moment as Spurs need an 88th-minute winner to seal victory through Harry Kane — a third appearance for West Brom.

Gameweek 9 – Chelsea v Newcastle (a)

Tammy Abraham scores the decisive second goal as Dane has more success against Newcastle.

Gameweek 10 – West Ham v Aston Villa (h)

Dane is a Hammers fan and needed his own team to win against an impressive Villa side to secure him a small fortune. Imagine the nerves.

“It wasn’t a conscious decision to leave them until that late in the game,” he said. “It was just the way it came about. They were the only team I could’ve picked at that point.”

Villa almost grabbed a late equaliser through Grealish but David Moyes’ troops held firm to send him into ecstasy.

“I was sweating so much, but after I’d calmed down I went and had a bath and tried chilling out for a little bit!”

Think you have it in you to emulate Dane’s glory? You’ve got until January 30th to sign-up for Selector!
