The list of traditional birthstones we all know and love comes from Polish tradition and can be traced back to the 16th and 18th Century. Another list came out in 1912 when the National Association of Jewellers released a list of modern birthstones, but the gems on this list were mostly transparent. Today, most people pick from one of the two lists depending on their taste.

Birthstones can be dated back to the first century, with a Jewish historian named Josephus suggesting that the 12 stones in Aaron’s breastplate represent the 12 zodiac signs and months of the year.

The list written by the American National Association in 1912 was associated with your birth month rather than your star sign.

This means that you may have two birthstones because star signs span two months.

For example, if you are a February Aquarius you will have different stones because it was decided that a particular stone is the stone of January and Aquarius.

It’s up to you to choose the stone you feel most connected with.

Birthstone meanings

Garnet (January or Aquarius)

Garnet is typically red and the word comes from ‘seed’.

It is supposed to strengthen the root chakra, and just like seeds it helps you to start new beginnings and move on.

This is a powerful stone that keeps you grounded and offers safety while travelling.

If you’re feeling scattered and anxious, this stone will help you to set roots or start something new.

Garnet also helps to get rid of bad vibes, negative attachments, and karma associated with past lives or people in your past.

Amethyst (February or Pisces)

Amethyst is a very powerful stone because it is supposed to open your third eye.

This helps you make good decisions and strengthens your gut feelings.

In a way, this stone helps you to become a little bit psychic and apparently lets you connect with your spirit guides and angels.

It is a peaceful stone that will heal and protect you from negativity.

Aquamarine or bloodstone (March or Aries)

Aquamarine has been used for centuries to protect sailors at sea, so it will help to protect you during rough times.

It is all about healing, relationships, and helps you to be brave.

If you have writer’s block or are struggling to be creative or think clearly, this stone is for you.

Bloodstone is also about physical and emotional healing and was said to be present when blood fell on the green earth at Jesus’ crucifixion.

Bloodstone protects against bullying and gives you courage and strength.

Like Aquamarine, it’s a great stone for making decisions and mental strength.

It also stimulates creativity and helps you to be more intuitive or understanding.

Sapphire or diamond (April or Taurus)

Diamonds enhance your energy and give you strength to overcome whatever is in your way.

Again, it’s a great stone for healing and cleansing.

Sapphires are all about faith, good luck and wise judgement.

They calm you down and help you beat unwanted thoughts.

Agate or emerald(May or Gemini)

Emerald will help you to attract love, money, and intuition.

Emerald will heal a broken heart and help you to stay open to love, fertility and rebirth.

The stone is said to make you magnetic to others, so wear it when you are looking for a lover or a new job.

You can substitute emerald for a green agate, they are both rare and will help you with the same battles.

Emerald, pearl or moonstone (June or Cancer)

Pearls are stabilisers, helping you to keep secure relationships and stay calm when you are angry or frustrated.

Pearls ease anxiety and stress and replace this with creative energy.

Because they are associated with the Moon, Pearls are meant to be linked with fertility and healthy pregnancies.

Moonstone will do the same job at a fraction of the price.

Onyx, ruby or carnelian (July or Leo)

Ruby is a peaceful stone that, just like garnet, is connected to the root chakra.

Wearing a Ruby will protect you from negative energy and help you to feel grounded.

Ruby is linked to your sex drive, and will also help to heal the body.

If you feel lacking in ambition or passion, a ruby will help.

Onyx helps with physical fitness and health, and helps you to fight off bullies and negative energy.

It also strengthens your instincts and relationships.

Carnelian will bring strength and dedication to help you do whatever you want.

Carnelian, peridot, or sardonyx (August or Virgo)

Peridot has been used forever to ward off black magic and hexes, so this stone helps to shake off bad luck and negative vibes.

It’s great for positive thinking and mental clarity and helps you heal from trauma.

Sardonyx is associated with courage, happiness and communication.

It will help you to achieve stable relationships, whether that’s romantically, familial or in friendship.

Chrysolite, Sapphire or lapis lazuli (September or Libra)

Sapphire brings wisdom and helps you to speak your mind by stimulating the throat chakra.

Sapphire helps you to see when someone is lying and notice when someone has an ulterior motive.

Sapphires are really expensive and rare, but a lapis lazuli will do the same trick.
Chrysolite helps you to live your life in a balanced way and brings good luck and prosperity.

Beryl or opal (October or Scorpio)

Opal is about faithfulness and love, as well as confidence and happiness.

Opal wards off depressive thoughts and self-deprecation.

Beryl helps you let go of emotional baggage and inspires you to move forward.
Beryl reminds you of your strong points and talents, so nobody can put you down or bully you.

Topaz or citrine (November or Sagittarius)

Topaz promotes feelings of love and helps you to be open-minded.

It’s a very peaceful stone and will help you to accept things that have happened and move on.

Because it is so expensive, you can supplement with citrine.
