Cash-saving tips and tricks to help you get through to payday

Worried about your spending this month?

Making your money stretch could be way easier than you think.

We’ve rounded up some simple ways to save this week.

First off, you could be saving a small fortune on travel just by downloading parking and car sharing apps or signing up for discounted train tickets.

Or if you’re one of the unlucky people who’ve been pinged and are struggling to get a refund for cancelled plans, read on below to find out how to get your money back.

Ride the rails for less

If you are travelling by train in a group of three to nine people, buying GroupSave tickets could help you save up to 34% on your UK fares.

GroupSave is a completely free way of getting discounted train travel — unlike any typical Railcard which has an annual fee.

Get your pingdemic refund

If you are one of the 4.5million people in the UK estimated to be asked to self-isolate before August 16, chances are you will have to cancel plans to go out.

Most venues let you rebook tickets but if you have problems getting a refund, contact your bank or credit card company.

If you’ve bought anything worth more than £100 but less than £30,000 by credit card, under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act you can claim your money back from the card company. If you paid by debit card, ask your card provider to reverse the transaction — useful where less than £100 is spent.

Free parking apps

Save money on days out by downloading free parking apps such as AppyParking and Parkopedia.

Plan your trip in advance and you can look up the free spots to park — you will be amazed by what you can save.

Cash in old currency

The Bank of England says there are at least £1.4billion in old paper £5 and £10 notes, and old £1 coins out there.

Moneysavingexpert.com says the Post Office will deposit old paper notes and coins into your bank account, which you can then withdraw.

Check the Post Office website to see if your bank is signed up to receive such deposits. You can’t do a direct cash swap at a post office.

Create a maintenance schedule

A home, auto and appliance maintenance checklist is a combined list of all ongoing maintenance tasks.

Go through the list once a month and take care of everything that’s due. Not only does keeping on top of essential maintenance extend the life of your vehicles and household appliances, it also means bigger, more costly repairs are needed less frequently.

Save money on motoring

60% of car journeys are made by one person. Car-share to cut costs and help the planet by finding people with similar journeys, using an app such as SKOOT.

With its ‘Drive And Grow’ feature, it plants a tree for every journey, too. Just log the start and the end of your trip.
