Meghan Markle has been shaking things up ever since she stepped foot into Kensington Palace. Making the move from Hollywood A-lister to duchess has been an insane transition — one that’s come with its fair share of hiccups. Despite being in a spotlight of a different color, Markle has made it a point to march to the beat of her own drum.
Being so independent has painted a target on the Suits alum’s back. Despite the haters, she hasn’t backed down. In fact, the Duchess of Sussex is standing stronger and taller than ever. At least, she isn’t the only member of the British royal family who isn’t afraid to go against the grain for their beliefs.
Meghan Markle is an avid humanitarian
Being the Duchess of Sussex comes with a big plate full of responsibilities. One of the biggest are the royal patronages. Earlier this year the Queen bestowed upon her the title of Patron for several foundations. This included the National Theatre, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Mayhew, and Smart Works. She’s also contributed to many other charities including The Wilderness Foundation UK and Crisis.
You’re probably asking yourself, how does any of this sound problematic? Well, these particular stances aren’t. The Queen carefully selected patronages that would be good for “business” and the other charities Markle requested wedding donations go to were vetted before they made the list.
But that doesn’t mean all of Markle’s opinions don’t come without controversy. After all, where Markle goes, controversy is bound to follow.
Markle isn’t afraid to take a stand despite adversity

Equally, you’ll find grassroots organisations and incredible trailblazers working tirelessly behind the scenes to change the world for the better. • “Guest Editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring. To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created. A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavour, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover. Thank you for saying “Yes!” – and to Edward, thank you for this wonderful opportunity.” – The Duchess of Sussex #ForcesForChange
Recently some of Markle’s activism choices have been met with caution. It came out that Markle acted as a guest editor for a Vogue issue that zeroed in on female trailblazers.
Considering Markle’s outspoken nature, she was warned that hovering to close to the “political sphere” could come with consequences. After all, the British royal family is funded by the taxpayers. The last thing they want to do is alienate the very people who keep them going.
All these years, the royals have risen above political issues, but being the woke Duchess, Markle is trying to make the family more aware of the societal problems. In fact, she basically looks at exposing the family to the misgivings in today’s society as a job of sorts.
“The problem is his wife clearly has a particular political agenda – she is the woke Duchess and she sees it as her life’s work to make the Royal Family woke. For a member of the Royal Family to take such an inadvertently political stance is always a bad idea because they are funded by the taxpayers and therefore they have an obligation to remain above the political sphere.” – Journalist Toby Young / talkRADIO
Prince Charles has also delved into political issues
Long before the Duchess of Sussex stepped on the scene, her father in law was reportedly stirring the pot. The Prince of Wales has always been outspoken about his interests, especially when it comes to climate change.
Unfortunately, his interest plunged the family into a decade-long debate. One where the public wanted the release of letters that Prince Charles wrote to various political figures.
Between 2005 and 2015, The Guardian did everything they could to get a hold of what was dubbed the “black spider memos” aka notes that the Prince of Wales exchanged with several active ministers. While it doesn’t seem like a big deal, it triggered a HUGE scandal. Why? Royal author Katie Nicholl explains.
“We don’t expect [members of the Royal Family] to be political, they’re not allowed to be political. Yet here was the future king meddling, as far as the Guardian was concerned, in matters that didn’t concern him.” – Katie Nicholl
So there you have it, any time a member of the royal family even appears to be meddling in politics it triggers a backlash from the British people. Perhaps Markle will be able to change things up, or maybe this longstanding tradition will win out in the end.
