When Stacey Stevenson, 30, noticed she’d put on some weight, she assumed that was just down to increased snacking and lack of activity in lockdown.
She couldn’t have known that she was actually pregnant, especially as she had no other symptoms.
Then she noticed that her feet were oddly swollen, and decided to take a pregnancy test.
To her surprise, it came back positive.
And to her even bigger surprise, two days later she was giving birth on the side of a motorway.
‘I had no idea the whole way through,’ Stacey said. ‘I didn’t gain weight, had no symptoms or anything.
‘Safe to say it was the biggest shock of my life. I don’t think I’m over it yet and he’s five weeks old.
‘He was a huge surprise but a very welcome one.
‘I actually only found out on the Tuesday that I was even pregnant.
‘My waters broke at 23.15 and I was on the phone to 999 by about 11.30pm.’
Just two days after discovering she was pregnant, Stacey’s waters broke at her home in Tillicoultry and she called for an ambulance.
But Callum, Stacey’s second child, just couldn’t wait, and was delivered in the ambulance at the side of the M876 at 1.38am on 11 July.
The mum has thanked emergency responders Emma Devlin and Lorraine Hardie, both of Falkirk Station, for helping her through giving birth when the fact she was pregnant hadn’t really sunk in.
Stacey said: ‘We headed for the hospital but didn’t quite make it.
‘Emma and Lorraine were amazing from the second they arrived – they were calm and confident, even though I think it was the first baby either of them had delivered.
‘Both ladies are honestly a credit to the service and I couldn’t have done it without them.
‘Both of them were amazing, helpful and calm.’
First responder Emma said: ‘Both myself and Lorraine are very happy that the delivery went well and that we were able to offer Stacey some reassurance and put her at ease as much as possible.
‘It must have been a terrifying experience for her as Stacey’s pregnancy had come as a surprise to her.
‘We are also both very happy that both Stacey and Callum are doing so well.’
