People are sharing their most embarrassing early-career work blunders

Mistakes are to be expected when you’re just getting started out at work.

Fortunately for most of us, though, these slip-ups aren’t broadcast to the world.

That wasn’t the case for one intern at HBO, who accidentally sent a test emailto thousands of the service’s subscribers back in 2021.

The red-faced trainee sent out a blank message to a large portion of HBO Max’s mailing list, some of whom pointed out the blunder to the TV provider on Twitter.

Thankfully HBO saw the funny side, confirming in a tweet they were helping the intern through their mistake.

And even though this staffer probably wanted the ground to swallow them up for quite some time, they may be happy to know that, two years later, their gaffe has sparked a global movement of confessions.

One person admitted: ‘Dear Intern, one time I sent out an email on behalf of the organisation’s board of directors with a link to a custom thank you video that was meant to show appreciation.

‘The link redirected to a lady in her pyjamas loudly reviewing hot Cheetos recipe fails. I cried twice that day.’

‘A family came to the desk and said their grandma was just brought in. I sat them down and had the doctor go tell them she had passed. It was the wrong family.’

#dearintern, when I was a new ER nurse a patient came in by ambulance with CPR in progress and she didn’t make it. A family came to the desk and said their grandma was just brought in. I sat them down and had the doctor go tell them she had passed. It was the wrong family.

Now that’s a bad day at work.

Yet, despite the cringe-inducing nature of these stories, they show just how common it is to mess up.

As long as you’re trying your best and learn from any mistakes, a clanger doesn’t have to be a career-ender.
