GRANIT XHAKA threw a tantrum as he was booed off by disgruntled Arsenal fans – following another poor display from the Gunners skipper.
MATTEO GUENDOUZI has spoken to the press after Arsenal's disappointing 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace this afternoon.
He said: “We really wanted to win the game so we attacked a lot towards the end to get the third goal.
“We allowed spaces [for Palace on the break] but it’s because we really wanted to win.
“It’s not a mental issue. We didn’t manage to hold our advantage. We knew they were a good team, with individual quality, and they played well for their goals.
“Zaha did well to get a penalty. It’s down to us to work so we win these kinds of matches after taking the lead.”
Emery was also left fuming about two controversial decisions when referee Martin Atkinson was twice overruled by rookie VAR official Jared Gillett.
First Palace were awarded a first-half penalty after Atkinson had already booked Wilfried Zaha for diving.
And then Arsenal had an 83rd minute winner ruled out when the cameras spotted a Calum Chambers foul in the build-up to the goal.
Emery complained: “In our last home match against Bournemouth we had a very clear penalty but VAR didn’t check.
“In our last game at Sheffield United we also had a very clear penalty and again they didn’t check.
“Today the referee said Zaha was simulation and it was amazing that they decided to check that penalty.
“Then we scored a third goal and VAR said it was a foul, but I checked it after the game and was not a foul.
“I don’t know who the person is on VAR checking these incidents but if the referee had watched the replays on the TV at the side of the pitch, I am sure he would decide it was not a foul.
“It seems that this week they are suddenly checking more actions but we need to manage VAR in the right way because at the moment it’s not working.”
UNAI EMERY condemned Granit Xhaka’s Emirates meltdown after the Arsenal captain launched a furious tirade at the supporters.
Swiss international Xhaka was jeered all the way off the pitch when he was substituted by Emery in the 60th minute of today's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
And he reacted by cupping his ears to the abuse and mouthing “f*** off” to the baying mob before tearing off his shirt and storming straight down the tunnel.
Now Emery will hold showdown talks with the 27-year-old midfielder but refused to say if he will take the armband away from him.
“Xhaka was wrong and now we need to stay calm and speak to him inside the club about that reaction,” Emery said.
“We are here because we have supporters. We are the workers but we play for them and we need to respect them, whether they are giving us applause or criticism.
“Now is not the time to speak about the captaincy but we are working with every player to manage dealing with the pressure.
“We can play with our hearts and sometimes get hot in difficult moments, but in our minds we must always be clever.
“I have had similar situations in the past but this evening the connection between the team and the supporters was amazing.
“There was one small individual incident but overall they support us and we must always respect them.”
