Can Man Utd clinch Champions League football if they beat Liverpool this weekend? What results do they need?

MANCHESTER UNITED fans are buzzing after a big European night at Old Trafford when the Red Devils looked back to the pomp of the Fergie days.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side can all-but ensure their qualification for next season's Champions League THIS weekend, if a few results go their way.

Beating Liverpool is a big part of the mix and United fans should be wary: Lose to the Reds on Sunday and – if Manchester City beat Crystal Palace – City will be crowned champions.

Here is how the scenarios can unfold for Solskjaer's side:

Manchester United – 67pts

  • If United beat Liverpool, they would go to 70 points with four games to play, 68 if they draw, stay on 67 if they lose.
  • United's goal difference of +29 is almost equal to an extra point – West Ham's is +10, Liverpool's +16, Spurs +18 and Everton +4.
  • If Manchester City beat Palace on Saturday and United lose, City have won the title.

Here are the teams United fans need to be looking out for this weekend:

West Ham – 55pts

  • If West Ham beat Burnley on Monday night, they can get a maximum of 70 points this season, if they draw that goes down to 68 and if they lose 67.

Liverpool – 54pts

  • If Liverpool lose they are in big trouble and would only be able to achieve a max total of 66 points, meaning they can't mathematically overtake United this season.
  • If Jurgen Klopp's side win at Old Trafford they can still mathematically overtake United, if they draw they can't mathematically catch Man Utd.
  • If Liverpool win – assuming City beat Palace – they'd also hand City the Premier League trophy.

Tottenham – 53pts

  • If Tottenham beat Sheffield United on Sunday evening, they can get a maximum points total of 68 points.
  • If they lose or draw they can't mathematically overtake United.

Everton – 52pts

  • The Toffees effectively have a game in hand, so they can pick up a max of 18 points this season still, so that's a potential total of 70 points.
  • If they draw with Aston Villa late on Saturday, that drops to 68, if they lose that drops to 67 and would be exceedingly unlikely to catch United.

What about Chelsea and Leicester?

Leicester – 62pts

  • The Foxes, who play Southampton on Friday night, can get a maximum of 77 points this season. They are currently third and on 62 points – so need to be wary of the points totals of the teams outside the top four, above.
  • Brendan Rodgers' side will want to beat Southampton and Newcastle in their next two games as they have Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs coming up, not forgetting they play Chelsea in the FA Cup final as well.

Chelsea – 58pts

  • At this point, the Blues can get a maximum of 73 points this season, but all the clubs outside the top four will be looking at them as the team to catch.
  • They have games against Fulham, Manchester City, Arsenal, Leicester and Aston Villa to come, so it is not an easy run-in.
  • If Chelsea finish OUTSIDE the top four but win the Champions League, there will be five Premier League teams in the competition, as there were in 2012/13 after the Blues won the tournament.
