Chelsea ratings: Kante makes welcome return with dominant display but Ziyech and Pulisic go missing in attack in draw

A COVID-HIT Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw away at Wolves on Sunday.

N'Golo Kante was recalled to the side after injury and was instrumental in Chelsea earning a clean sheet.

He was also integral to Chelsea's possession game but a lack of creativity and missed chances let down the Blues, with Christian Pulisic missing a great chance late on.

Thomas Tuchel will be pleased with an improved defensive display but he will be upset with the Premier League.

The German wanted the game postponed due to the number of positive Covid cases in the squad but the match was ordered to go ahead.

Chelsea named just five substitutes, two of which were goalkeepers, and Tuchel was unable to impact the game from his options on the bench.

As a result the Blues have been dealt another setback in the title race with leaders Manchester City beating Newcastle 4-0.

Here is how Simon Phillips rated the Chelsea performances.

Edouard Mendy – 7

He was probably busier than he expected to be today with a few shots to save and crosses to deal with.

Those in front of him were caught sleeping a few times and allowed easy attempts at Mendy's goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6

He was often a bit too safe in possession and kept overhitting long passes.

But he largely did his job to a fair level and was trying to gee up his team-mates the best he could.

Thiago Silva – 9

One of the better performers for Chelsea once again, the man who makes this sport look very easy.

Chelsea without him at the back probably would have been 2-0 down in the first half.

Antonio Rudiger – 6

Put in 100% effort as always and was trying to make a difference and make things happen for Chelsea, but he did lose concentration a few times at the back for Chelsea which could have been dangerous.

Reece James – 7

It wasn't his best game and he was robbed in possession on a couple of occasions.

But once he grew into it he did start to get the better of his marker a few more times and was making a difference in attack for Chelsea.

N'Golo Kante – 10

Chelsea needed him back today and he had to start the game due to Covid-19 cases and injuries.

He was Chelsea's brightest spark even though he might have been a little unfit.

He was the main guy for Chelsea today where all the possession was going through. Perfect performance.

Trevoh Chalobah – 7

He was asked to play in the more unfamiliar centre midfield role today, although he has played there on loan before so it's not too unfamiliar.

He did okay apart from making a couple of silly challenges and getting booked early in the game.

Marcos Alonso – 5

Not a great performance from the Spaniard once again and this has become all too familiar for him in a Chelsea shirt.

He wasn't even effective in attack which is the one thing he can often provide.

Mason Mount – 6

Lost possession a few too many times for Chelsea's liking in the first half but he was once again one of the few who looked like an attacking threat for Chelsea.

Hakim Ziyech – 5

I forgot that he was on the pitch at times in the first half he barely touched the ball.

There were moments that he did get the ball and looked to make things happen but he wasn't good enough yet again.

Christian Pulisic – 5

Unfamiliar role for him as well but the ball would not stick with him and he was pretty non-existent playing as a false nine.

But needs must again with the Covid-19 issues at the club – he certainly isn't a striker and was poor again today.

Saul Niguez for Chalobah (HT) – 7

Much more comfortable game from him with some neat touches in the defensive midfield role.

Mateo Kovacic for Ziyech (64 mins) – 7

His energy and play on the ball helped Chelsea when he came on and it was nice to see him back.
