Khabib Nurmagomedov to snub Conor McGregor and will only make UFC return for Georges St-Pierre, says Daniel Cormier

KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV is only likely to make a return to the UFC for his dream-fight with Georges St-Pierre, according to Daniel Cormier.

It comes as a blow to Conor McGregor, who has been desperate to rematch his arch rival ever since he lost their grudge match in 2018.

But with Nurmagomedov having announced his retirement in October, McGregor's shot at redemption appears bleak.

And DC – a close friend and training partner of Khabib's – believes the lightweight king would only be tempted back by UFC legend GSP.

Cormier, 41, told MMA Fighting: “It would have to be Georges St-Pierre.

“I believe that a big fight is what he would want in order to just prove himself.

"Like you said, Khabib Nurmagomedov is just trying to make history and a win over Georges St-Pierre would do exactly that for him.

“When your resume becomes so big, not many things can add value to it. If he can go and [fight] GSP and beat GSP, that adds value."

Nurmagomedov, 32, hung up the gloves after beating Justin Gaethje, 31, at UFC 254.

It was the first fight since the loss of his influential father Abdulmanap, who passed away aged 57 in July after contracting coronavirus.

But beforehand, Nurmagomedov had confirmed it was always their plan to retire unbeaten in 30 fights.

And with the Russian one win away from achieving the goal, UFC president Dana White is hopeful the superstar will come back for one more.

As a result, Nurmagomedov has even kept hold of his lightweight crown and will meet White on Fight Island in January to discuss his future.

But Cormier has warned the feared grappler is hard to convince and may remain good to his word.

He said: “I don’t know for certain that Khabib is going to fight. I don’t know if he’s not going to fight.

"I try to keep our relationship a friendship. I don’t want to always be talking to him about things about his career because he’s a star.

“But if you’re Dana White, I think he’s playing it the exact way he needs to and I don’t know where Khabib is personally.

"But if you ask me still, I know this guy is a man of his word so I don’t know what he’s going to do.”
