Man City ace Gundogan says VAR is sucking fun out of football… without ending the mistakes – The Sun

ILKAY GUNDOGAN says VAR is sucking the joy out of football — without removing any of the uncertainty.

Champions Manchester City have been on the wrong end of three key decisions by the new technology in their opening three Premier League fixtures.

And midfielder Gundogan is struggling to see how the game is being improved by referees now relying on TV replays to make the contentious calls for them.

He said: “VAR is changing football not only for the players but also for the spectators and everyone who loves the game.

“Unfortunately it takes away the main reason why we all love football, and that’s the emotion.”

The German international voiced his fears after Sunday’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth, when David Silva was clearly fouled in the box yet still wasn’t awarded a penalty after the incident had been reviewed by the VAR officials.

It came hot on the heels of Raheem Sterling having a goal ruled out at West Ham because his armpit was three millimetres offside.

And City are still stewing over last week’s 2-2 draw with Spurs, when Gabriel Jesus’ late winner was disallowed because the ball had inadvertently brushed the arm of Aymeric Laporte.

Gundogan said: “I’m not a big fan even though we can’t deny that it helps the referee.

“But the big problem is that even when an incident has been referred to VAR, there is still not a clear judgment.
