But the Imps held their nerve and sealed their spot at next week’s shoot-out for a place in the Championship thanks to Tom Hopper.

The game burst into life on 13 minutes when Ross Stewart pulled a goal back for Sunderland.

Then, after missing a golden opportunity earlier, top scorer Charlie Wyke made it 2-0 and 2-2 on aggregate with 33 minutes on the clock.

Lincoln looked like they were throwing it all away, but a tactical switch at half time but boss Michael Appleton led to their revival.

Just over ten minutes after the restart their efforts got rewarded when Hopper scored to put them ahead in the tie again.

They could have then put the game to bed but Jorge Grant’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Lee Burge.

Sunderland huffed and puffed for an equaliser to take it to extra time but Wyke squandered another opportunity as they failed to make their pressure count to leave the Imps celebrating.

They will now meet Blackpool next week to determine who will be playing Championship football next term.
