All Creatures Great and Small has returned to Channel 5 and fans are keen to see if James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) and Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton) continue their relationship. The pair have had a turbulent time since Helen called off her marriage to Hugh Hulton (Matthew Lewis) in the Christmas special. Actor Ralph spoke to Jeremy Vine about a character making a comeback in the next episode.

All Creatures Great and Small fans were thrilled to see Helen and James share their first kiss in the latest episode.

Having admitted their feelings for each other, they decided to give their romantic relationship a chance.

The pair have experienced a number of tiffs but could not deny they were in love.

This was until Helen found out James could be moving back to Glasgow for a new job, and the tension arose once more.

In a clip for the next episode, the characters are seen discussing an upcoming cricket match.

Jeremy Vine and the rest of the panel watched the clip during one of his recent Channel 5 shows.

They spoke to actor Ralph about what this could mean for Helen and James’ relationship, and he said trouble could be looming.

Ralph explained: “In the last couple of episodes we have seen them getting to know each other and re-acquaint under these new circumstances.

“Both being single, they have had their first kiss and things like that.

“But yeah, Hugh Hulton comes back into the mix and I think James feels he is fighting for Helen’s attention.

“He gets a little bit jealous. And there’s a cricket match – one team is Hugh Hulton’s team and the other team is Darrowby 11.

“James, not being much of a cricketer, decides to step up to try and win back Helen’s affection. We will see how that goes.

“Romance is potentially on the cards.” With the return of Helen’s ex-fiancé, there is a chance her relationship with James will be hindered.

Helen still feels guilty after abandoning Hugh at the altar, and this guilt could get the better of her.

Would she be willing to give Hugh another chance? Or has her mind been firmly made up?

Fans have been rooting for a Helen and James relationship ever since he moved to Darrowby in season one.

James almost admitted his feelings for Helen before her wedding, but he could not go through with it.

Helen, on the other hand, came to terms with her feelings towards James just in time as she called off the big day.

Friends of Hugh informed viewers how he had gone off to another part of the world, feeling heartbroken.

This only made Helen feel even more to blame, but James continued to stand by her.

From what actor Ralph says, he will not be going down without a fight when Hugh returns.

The cricket match acts as symbolism for the battle to win Helen’s heart, and fans are rooting for James to be the victor.

It is yet to be revealed whether Hugh has returned to Darrowby for good, or whether this is a temporary stop-over.

Viewers will be hoping his visit will be short, as they wish to see James and Helen get married.

All Creatures Great and Small season 2 airs on Thursdays on Channel 5 at 9pm.
