Danny Dyer first joined the cast of EastEnders in 2013. The actor plays the Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter in the long-running BBC soap. However, his time in the iconic Albert Square is coming to an end as the show confirmed the actor is leaving.

EastEnders will soon have to find a new landlord for Walford’s favourite pub as Danny’s departure from the soap is on the horizon.

An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed to Express.co.uk: “Danny will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end later this year.

“Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however we won’t be saying goodbye just yet as there’s still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford.”

The actor has reportedly taken a new role in an upcoming Sky drama series.

However, a friend close to the star has made it clear he is “incredibly grateful” to EastEnders for the opportunities the show gave him.

They said: “Danny loves EastEnders but as an actor he feels the time is right to explore other roles.

“He’s incredibly grateful to the show and the opportunities it has given him and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly.

“But, after playing Mick for nearly nine years he feels it’s time to give the character of Mick a rest.

“He’s not sure how they are going to write him out yet but he’s hoping that they leave the door open for Mick,” they added.

If the soap’s writers listen to Danny’s wishes, this may mean Mick won’t be gone for good.

As long as Mick isn’t killed off, there’s a chance he could return to Walford again in the future.

Another EastEnders source confirmed the plans for Danny’s exit from the soap have been set out for a while.

They said: “Danny made the decision quite some time ago that he would leave the show this year which has given bosses plenty of time to plan a huge storyline for him.

“With Kellie set to return very soon, the Carters are going to be at the heart of some big drama this year,” the source added.

Danny’s character Mick has been involved in some emotional storylines on the soap over the years.

In 2020 his family expanded as he discovered he had another daughter, Frankie Lewis (played by Rose Ayling-Ellis).

In heartbreaking scenes, it was revealed Mick was the victim of sexual abuse at the age of 12, and his abuser became pregnant with Frankie.

Mick struggled as he looked back on his past, but his abuser was eventually convicted for her crimes.

It’s currently unconfirmed exactly when Danny’s final scenes on EastEnders will air, but he’s expected to feature in more storylines in 2022.

EastEnders continues Tuesday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
