Tom, 21, has gained huge acclaim after the youngster secured a gold medal in the Men’s 200m swimming event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Joining Dan Walker, 44, and Sam Quek, 32, on BBC’s Olympic Breakfast, the Olympian’s mother, Jacquie Hughes, spoke with the presenters about her son’s success. However, it was a home video of her reaction to the result which dominated the conversation, leaving the guest with her head in her hands.
In the minute-long clip, which has been posted on social media, Tom’s friends and family are seen gathered around a screen to watch the event.
As the Olympian’s lead was evident, the crowd got more and more excited as Jacquie jumped up and down whilst clapping for her son.
When the swimmer took first place, his supporters hugged one another and cheered in jubilation at his success.
Beginning the interview with Jacquie, Dan said: “We’ve seen the video from your back garden this morning. Congratulations.”
The athlete’s mother put her hands to her face before speaking as it became clear she was embarrassed about going viral.
Asked how she was doing, Jacquie replied: “I don’t know actually. I think it’s Tuesday morning and I haven’t been to bed for quite a few nights because of the time of the heats and the semis.
“We had that family watch party last night with that rather embarrassing footage that seems to have gone everywhere.
“Which was kind of funny but I just wasn’t expecting it at all and every time I look at it, I see someone else doing something really funny.
“But apart from that, I’m delighted. I feel surreal at the moment, I feel like it’s a bit of a dream,” she continued.
