In previous weeks, Emmerdale resident Sarah Sugden (played by Katie Hill) has been left worrying about her health after she collapsed at home. Not only has she been concerned about her own wellbeing, but she has also aired her fears about Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) who is waiting to find out if her cancer has returned. The teen has also been left in a continuous anxious state following the death of Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) last month on the ITV soap. But could Cain (Jeff Hordley) sacrifice himself for his granddaughter’s wellbeing?
In the most recent episodes, Sarah, along with several of the other teenagers living in the village, have been mourning the death of 18-year-old Leanna.
Sarah is not only trying to grieve for her friend but she is also worried about her own health after she had a heart transplant.
Despite her fears, Sarah has also been trying to get Cain Dingle to make amends with his mum, Faith.
In scenes that aired on Tuesday night’s programme, in an attempt to take her mind off things, Faith decided to book a day of rock climbing for her and Sarah.
Sarah was on board with the idea, although she quickly hatched a plan and decided to invite Cain as well.
Cain was unsure at first, however, it didn’t take Sarah long to win him around. Although, little did he know that his mum will be there too.
During the instalment, Faith interrupted Sarah as she was researching elevated heart rates in heart transplants patients.
“Is that thing glued to your hand or something?” Faith asked her as she sat down.
“It is a beautiful day out there. Please tell me you’re not going to waste it?” Faith continued.
“What’s so interesting anyway?” Faith asked as Sarah replied: “Nothing much, just stuff.
“GCSE results are due out soon and it’s getting everyone proper stressed.”
Changing the subject, Faith went on to tell Sarah about the day of activities she has booked for them both.
“Seriously?” Sarah asked as Faith replied: “I am game if you are?”
Faith admitted she was hoping their day out would help to distract her from her test results.
As the episode came to a close, Faith finally found out that she was still in remission from cancer.
But despite her delight following her scan results, the doctor did diagnose her with arthritis.
When she got home, an emotional Faith told her daughter, Chas (Lucy Pargeter) about the news but when she bumped into Cain and Sarah in the pub, she decided not to tell them
“So, seeing how we have got this place for ourselves,” Faith began before Sarah interrupted: “Grumpy is going to come up with us tomorrow.”
“Really?” Faith said in shock as Cain replied: “Yeah, why not? It’ll take your mind off everything.”
“So that’s it then,” Sarah continued. “The three of us. One big happy family.”
“What was it you wanted to tell us?” Sarah asked.
However, in the end, Faith decided not to reveal her scan results to her family.
Sarah appeared to be worried at the thought of going rock climbing because of her heart transplant but she doesn’t reveal her true feelings to her family.
The teen has already been unwell as a result of the life-saving operation, but could she end up having another accident while rock climbing.
With Cain desperate to save his daughter, could he end up putting his own life in danger to save Sarah after the effects of her heart transplant leave her at risk?
The actress who plays Sarah recently opened up about her health storyline during an interview with Inside Soap.
“I’m so pleased that Emmerdale is revisiting Sarah’s dramatic past,” Katie said. “It’s been such a touching storyline from the very start.
“When I played out the heart-transplant stuff, I knew that one day it would be emotional to get back into it, and for Sarah to try to find out the identity of her donor…”
“Leanna’s death has had quite an impact on Sarah, it leaves Sarah worrying about her own life, and how this could happen to her.
“Sarah has a very problematic medical history and the doctors have told her that she might have a shortened life.”
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
