The reboot of CW’s immensely popular series is proving to be just as popular after premiering recently on HBO Max. However, hopeful fans are praying that some of the original characters will appear in the future and their wish was granted as magazine editor Nelly Yuki (played by Yin Chang) returned to disrupt a Halloween party.

Viewers were surprised and delighted when a reboot of the popular CW series was announced but showrunner Joshua Safran has promised the new series will be very different.

While fans of the original series have been spotting subtle nods to the show’s predecessor, a recent cameo proved to be the best of them all and fans were elated at the surprise.

Yin Chang, who portrayed Nelly Yuki, the former academic rival to Queen B Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester), briefly appeared in the Halloween episode of the reboot.

Safran originally teased the cameo on Twitter prior to the episode airing, writing: “Oh wait, I think I forgot to mention tomorrow’s Gossip Girl includes an ACTUAL returning cast member from the original!”

After original cast member Azhy Robertson, who played Georgina Sparks’ (Michelle Trachtenberg) son Milo, first appeared in the reboot, fans were wondering who would turn up next.

Viewers were excited to see that Nelly made a brief return during a party scene, and many were surprised that she was the chosen character.

It was revealed that magazine reporter Obie (Ellie Brown) works for Nelly, who became a successful editor after graduating on the original series.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to express their excitement about Nelly’s brief appearance, with one fan writing: “Omg Nelly Yuki! #GossipGirl.”

Another viewer clearly missed Nelly’s presence on the new series, said: “I doubt the new Gossip Girl incarnation has a baddie b like Nelly Yuki.” (sic)

“NELLY YUKIII!!!!! and omg every single ep Gossip Girl comes out with like is literally more and more wholesome than the next I’m loving the depth,” another added. (sic)

Someone else commented: “Our very own, Nelly Yuki [star emoji] B will always be proud of you girl! [wink emoji] #GossipGirl #gossipgirlhbomax.” (sic)

The comments kept flying in, with another writing: “IT IS NOT GOSSIP GIRL WITHOUT NELLY YUKI.”

Another fan was clearly ecstatic by the cameo and hoped more characters would appear soon, adding: “OMG!! Nelly yuki in the new #GossipGirl. I’m lovin it! Hope we can see Blair and Serena soon!” (sic)

Someone else was surprised by the choice of cameo, adding: “I really thought we were really going to see the og #GossipGirl crew. BUT….. NELLY YUKI WAS SERVING!!!!” (sic)

“Nelly!!! Omgggg nostalgia #GossipGirl,” another excited viewer remarked.

The original Gossip Girl series ran for six seasons from 2007-2012 and followed the lives of a group of affluent teenagers living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

After premiering, the reboot looks set to carve out its own path while still paying homage to the original.

Speaking to TVLine, Safran has promised the new series would greatly consider the changing times, aiming to be “more aware now” in the age of social media and celebrity culture.

“They know the world they’re in. They know that wherever they go, it’ll be talked about,” he noted.

The showrunner notes that the characters are happier at the start of the series and “then it’s a slow descent into madness for everybody.”

The Gossip Girl reboot is available to watch on HBO Max in the US, and will be available sometime later this year on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
