The Blacklist season nine will premiere on NBC tonight and fans have been keen to see the crime thriller series return. The TV show was renewed for a ninth instalment back in January 2021 and it is expected to feature a two-year time jump. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about whether the events of the new season will mark the end of the show.
Is The Blacklist ending after season 9?
The Blacklist is a long-running crime series telling the story of US Navy Officer, Reddington (played by James Spader), who helps the FBI hunt down top criminals.
The season eight final featured the murder of fan-favourite character Liz Keen (Megan Boone) and viewers were wondering how this would change the dynamic of the team.
The new season will pick up two years after her death and fans will find out just how much it has impacted the show’s main characters.
For the FBI, the taskforce is set to disband with many members heading down new paths.
But for Raymond Reddington, he will be drawn back to his old team in order to take down dangerous Blacklisters.
At this moment in time, it is too early to say whether the series will be ending with season nine.
The number of episodes for the current season is yet to be confirmed, so its future is still uncertain.
The eighth season was made up of 22 episodes, so it is hoped the current outing will feature the same number.
A lot could happen in this time, with other main characters potentially finding their lives hanging in the balance.
After her character died in the series, actress Boone took to Instagram to say an emotional goodbye.
She said: “This experience, for me, has been an entire life inside of my own life.
“These eight years playing Liz Keen have helped me better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same.
“Liz sought incorruptible familial bonds, and collided with powerful forces to reveal the boundaries where a cruel, indifferent world ended and she began.”
She did not allude to how long the series will continue to air in her absence.
The day after the season eight finale, creator Jon Bokenkamp also left the show.
He said on Twitter: “I love this show with all of my heart and it’s been an incredible journey.
“But after eight years I feel it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head.”
With this in mind, the future of the series is even more uncertain and fans will have to wait a while to find out what is in store.
Speaking to Deadline, Sony Pictures TV Studios President Jeff Frost said he hoped the series would continue for a long time.
So there is hope season 10 could come to fruition, but it is dependent on how much story there is left to tell.
With most of the Blacklisters having already been revealed, Reddington’s job may almost be complete.
Similarly, Reddington himself has admitted he has almost reached the end of his long-running project.
If season 10 does get the green light, it is likely to venture off into new territory to keep the story alive.
NBC will most likely assess the latest viewing figures before deciding whether to renew the series.
The Blacklist airs on Thursdays at 8pm on NBC.
