ITV cancels Good Morning Britain between Christmas and New Year amid Covid-19 fears

Good Morning Britain's episodes between Christmas and New Year have been cancelled amid fears of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

ITV bosses are said to have made the call yesterday as concerns among staff and presenters about the pandemic continue to mount.

The pre-Christmas episodes of the ITV news show will go ahead, but presenters are said to have been asked to do their own hair and makeup.

A spokeswoman told The Sun: "There is a special GMB Christmas Day show which airs from 7-9am.

"GMB was due to be on air from Weds 29th – Fri 31st December 2021 but due to the pandemic and to protect our teams, we have decided to give them an extended break.

"GMB will not broadcast next week, but will be back on air on Tues 4th Jan 2022."

Meanwhile, a source revealed to the publication that staffing shortages are making the show "near impossible" to air.

They said: "This is all but unheard of, to lose a whole week of a flagship show like this.

"It just shows how alarmed everyone is within the network and on the show itself.

"We even aired throughout the height of the pandemic, but lately it is becoming near impossible with staffing shortages and fears about the Christmas period being derailed for everyone.

"Hopefully things will get back to normal early in the New Year – it’s a big blow for the network, and for advertising too."

Susanna Reid, Charlotte Hawkins and Ranvir Singh present the show alongside Sean Fletcher, who recently tested positive for Covid, Adil Ray, Ben Shephard as well as weather experts Alex Beresford and Laura Tobin.

It comes after presenter Sean revealed he has been forced to isolate over Christmas after tested positive for Covid.

Sharing the news on Instagram one the weekend, Sean shared an image of his positive lateral flow test and a blood-soaked tissue after cutting his finger on a knife.

He wrote in the caption of the share, which he posted on Sunday 19 December: "Had quite a morning.

"A positive Lateral Flow Test backed up by a positive PCR test.

Went downstairs for breakfast and cut my finger with a bread knife. Couldn’t stop it bleeding."

Sean continued: "Patched myself up in time for an appearance on #SundayMorningLive via zoom with #AdrianChiles covering for me, alongside @jacquijosephdesigns, on a programme that also featured my previous co-presenters @sallysmack @nina.wadia and @revkatebottley, as well as @raetheduke @thekingdomchoir @henry.bonsu @drnighatarif among others.

On Monday 20 December, the show was fronted by Adil and Charlotte.
