The Crown has announced its latest casting news for season 5, with Jonny Lee Miller set to play former prime minister Sir John Major.
He will join Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
In season four of the hit Netflix series, The Crown took viewers all the way up to December 1990, placing a spotlight on the rocky marriage between Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor).
It’s expected that season five will have a time jump of a couple of years, introducing The Crown’s audience to a new cast as they’re transported to the early 1990s, during Sir John’s tenure as prime minister.
From 1990 to 1997, Sir John served as the leader of the Conservative Party and as the prime minister of the UK, having previously served in Margaret Thatcher’s government.
It has now been confirmed that he will be portrayed by Trainspotting star Jonny’s, whose other previous roles include starring in Hackers, Emma and as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes in Elementary.
The Crown shared the news of Jonny’s casting by posting the actor’s headshot on Twitter, with several fans expressing their excitement.
‘The Crown never disappoints with their casting. They always pick the right actor for the job. Jonny Lee Miller is a tremendous talent. I can’t wait to see him join one of the best television series ever made,’ one person tweeted.
Nonetheless, others found the casting choice strange, with someone else remarking: ‘Tbf I’d be skeptical they could pull it off but they managed to make Gillian Anderson Thatcher.’
‘I really don’t know how I feel about this,’ another said. ‘No denying he’s a brilliant actor but like… how is this gonna work?’
Amid the official casting news, it’s been rumoured that Dominic West is to play an older version of Prince Charles, with Variety reporting in October 2020 that he was in discussions for the role.
It’s expected that The Crown season five won’t arrive on Netflix until 2022, although a release date has not yet been formally announced.
The first four seasons of The Crown are available to watch on Netflix.
