On Tuesday’s instalment of Dan Wootton’s Tonight Show, the GB News host welcomed Lady Colin Campbell and Phil Dampier on to speak about the recent royal headlines including the upcoming series of The Crown. With Netflix’s show set to feature Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir, the panel discussed Prince William’s pleas for it to be cut from the drama.

The highly anticipated fifth series of the fictional drama series is set to air this month with it heavily focusing on the marriage breakdown and aftermath of Princess Diana and King Charles’s split.

During the season, the late Princess of Wales’ infamous interview with Martin Bashir that took place in 1995 will be portrayed across two episodes.

After an investigation revealed that Bashir used forgery and deception to secure the chat with Diana, Prince William said in a statement that the interview should never be aired again.

Despite the heir to the throne reportedly pleading that bosses of the show cut his mother’s bombshell Panorama interview, his wishes have reportedly been ignored.

With many believing that the Prince won’t be happy that Netflix is ignoring his demands, Dan Wootton highlighted that his brother, Prince Harry is continuing to work with the organisation for his upcoming documentary.

Dan asked Lady C what she thinks of the situation as he admitted he couldn’t understand the hypocrisy of working with Netflix despite them going against his brother’s wishes.

She said: “It’s a no-brainer, as long as there are shekels and pieces of silver to be acquired.

“Of course, he’s going to tear what he can and tear people down the river and allow organisations to abuse his family unfairly and really to abuse the British people unfairly. The man is a total hypocrite.”

She continued: “There’s no doubt about it, he just can’t help himself, it’s all about money and fame.”

Lady C’s comments come after Harry’s documentary with his wife Meghan Markle is set to air on the streaming platform next year.

Sharing his view on the situation, Phil Dampier told the GB News host that it’s hard to ignore Diana’s interview as it was a pivotal moment.

He told Dan: “It was extremely important because the Queen shortly afterwards order that she and Charles should get divorced and they did the next year.

“I don’t really see how they can ignore it so for once I think The Crown has got the right to go ahead with it, but obviously it’s going to be distressing for William and I can sympathise with him.”

The fifth series, which will air on November 9, will primarily focus on the royal split along with Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

It’s not only William whose wishes are being ignored either as the show recently caused controversy with many members cancelling their subscriptions after bosses rejected requests that a disclaimer should be added.

Although The Crown follows real-life momentous occasions within the royal timeline, it is a fictional show that has been dramatised for entertainment purposes.

With many viewers concerned fans will take it as historical truth, there have been calls for a disclaimer to be placed before the episodes.

It’s not only fans of the show who are demanding Netflix add a statement as actress Judi Dench has claimed the false portrayal of the royals is damaging to the monarchy.

In an open letter, published by The Times, the iconic star called the upcoming fifth series “cruelly unjust”.

The Crown season 5 premieres on Netflix on November 9.
