Ever since the reunion of Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) took place in season 22 of the NBC hit drama, Law and Order: SVU fans have been scratching their heads as to whether a romance is on the horizon in the future. After a promising finale, two recent photos of the actors on-set has viewers concerned that a break-up could lead Stabler to quit Organized Crime.

A few weeks ago, some on-set photos of Mariska Hargitay were released and fans were in a frenzy as her outfit seemed to suggest that the season 23 premiere would directly follow on from Finn’s (Ice-T) wedding in the season 22 finale.

Benson was seen in the same dress from the wedding and viewers were theorising why there wasn’t going to be a time jump next season.

Viewers have been praying that the lack of time jump means that Benson and Stabler will be getting together in season 23 and that something happens between the two after the wedding is over.

However, another photo was leaked recently showing Stabler with a full beard and wearing a New York Fire Department uniform.

The photo now has fans questioning if the two eventually break up in the forthcoming season, leading Stabler to quit Organized Crime to avoid seeing her.

Ever since star Meloni returned to the Law and Order franchise earlier this year in a spin-off series, Stabler has had numerous crossovers with his former squad.

Despite working on different task forces, the two still end up seeing each other a lot.

So could Stabler leaving Organized Crime to become a firefighter be the only way he can heal from the breakup?

Stabler‘s role as a firefighter makes sense for the character as the new role will feed his need to help others.

But how will Stabler fare if he leaves Organized Crime?

Sadly, in the series premiere of the sequel series, Stabler’s wife Kathy (Isabel Gillies) was murdered by crime boss Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott).

The former detective’s desire for revenge led him to join the special task force back in New York to hunt the criminal down and avenge his wife.

However, for season one of Organized Crime, Stabler has had a mission to capture Wheatley but, in the finale, the character managed to escape custody.

With Wheatley still out there and on his mind, could a break-up with his closest friend be the reason he leaves the team?

Stabler is still suffering from guilt over failing to save his wife and losing Benson could prove to be too much for him.

His broken heart would probably outweigh his need for revenge, so it makes sense that he would leave the job that put him in this position in the first place.

In the past, Meloni has spoken about the potential of Benson and Stabler getting together, telling People magazine: “I think there’s a world of possibility.”

Meloni and Hargitay have always recognised their chemistry on-screen, with the former adding: “Obviously, we recognised it when we were together on SVU.

“We were always kind of toying with that, leading into that, teasing with that.”

Hopefully, the two begin a relationship in season 23 but fans will surely be wishing that Stabler doesn’t leave the Organized Crime Unit and the pair can make it work.

One fan agreed, writing on Twitter: “I’ve never been more confused and excited in my life.”

Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Organized Crime are both available to watch on NBC in the US. Season 22 of SVU and season 1 of Organized Crime are currently airing in the UK on Sky Witness and Now TV.
