Law and Order Special Victims Unit (SVU) is the longest-running live-action show in history and is still going strong. Returning for its 24th season on NBC, the latest series will start with a crossover special with one storyline weaved through SVU, Organized Crime and Law and Order. Express.co.uk has everything there is to know about the cast of Law and Order’s Gimme Shelter.

Who stars in Law and Order SVU season 24 episode 1?

Olivia Benson – Mariska Hargitay

Law and Order SVU wouldn’t be the same without Captain Olivia Benson who has been in the drama from the beginning in 1999.

She has worked her way up the ranks over the years, having been promoted to the top job in season 21 and now leads her team.

Before her SVU days, actress Mariska Hargitay had appeared in other series such as Downtown, Falcon Crest, Tequila and Bonetti, Can’t Hurry Love, ER and Prince Street.

Over the years, she has popped up across the franchise in Law and Order and Organized Crime as well.

Odafin Tutuola – Ice-T

Odafin “Fin” Tutuola is another piece of the puzzle in SVU as Sergeant and second-in-command at the Manhattan unit.

When he isn’t acting alongside Hargitay, Ice-T is a rapper, producer and songwriter and has been nominated for numerous Grammy Awards during his career and went on to win in 1991 for his collaboration on the Back on the Block album.

His first-ever TV appearance was in the 1980s series of Fame where he played a member of the gang The Enforcers.

Ice-T’s other projects have included New York Undercover, Players, Chicago PD and The Ghetto.

Amanda Rollins – Kelli Giddish

Amanda Rollins has been in Law and Order SVU for the past 12 years, having joined the team in 2013.

Sadly, it was revealed earlier this year that this would be actress Kelli Giddish’ final season, despite starting a relationship with Peter Scanavino (Dominick Carisi Jr) last series.

It wasn’t Giddish’ choice to leave the drama, with reports that it was a decision made above the pay grade of the show’s producers.

In a statement, Giddish said: “Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life.

“I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins.

“She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

Dominick Carisi Jr.  – Peter Scanavino

As previously mentioned, Dominick Carisi Jr. and Rollins kicked off season 23 as a couple after that cliffhanger kiss in the series 22 finale.

Their relationship remained on a high the last time SVU was airing and this is expected to continue to be the case, but how will they get their happily ever after with Rollins leaving?

Actor Peter Scanavino has had minor acting roles before joining the NBC drama.

Some of his other credits are Deception, Old Friends, Golden Boy, Unforgettable, The Blacklist and Social Distance.

Joe Velasco – Octavio Pisano

Detective Joe Velasco was assigned to the squad after the retirement of Kat Tamin (Jamie Gray Hyder) who left at the start of season 23.

Actor Octavio Pisano starred in If Loving You is Wrong on the Oprah Winfrey Network for three years.

He then went on to feature in Coyote, iLove, Feral State and Presence.

Law and Order SVU season 24 premieres on Thursday, September 22, on NBC in the USA. A UK release date hasn’t been announced.
