The fifth and final season of Money Heist – also known as La Casa de Papel – arrives on September 3 as the likes of Lisbon (played by Itziar Ituño), The Professor (Alvaro Morte) and Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) try to escape the clutches of the law and leave the Bank of Spain for good. However, in true Money Heist fashion, it’s not going to be as simple as it sounds with the full force of the Spanish police and military ready to stop at nothing to bring the criminals down. Now, an action-packed official trailer for season five, volume one shows just what fans can expect – and it doesn’t look good for the crew’s leading man.

The promo for the final season of Money Heist opens fresh off the back of the death of the gang’s long-serving member Nairobi (Alba Flores) at the hands of Gandia (Jose Manuel Poga).

The Bank of Spain’s head of Security reappears in the fifth season trailer but not before Tokyo provides a voiceover explaining what’s happening.

“Locked up for 100 hours,” Tokyo begins as an aerial shot of the bank plays out. “Trapped and about to be killed.

“And having lost a best friend,” she continued as Oslo (Darko Peric) carried Nairobi’s body up the bank’s stairs.

“It feels like 100 years have gone by,” Tokyo adds as the promo unravels to reveal a number of other intriguing plot lines.

Fans see Angel (Fernando Soto) liaise with the military about an all-or-nothing insurgence of the bank to bring the robbers out.

Elsewhere, Tokyo attacks Gandia, Oslo readies himself to break out, Denver (Daniel Ramon) and Stockholm (Esther Acebo) share an intimate moment, and there’s the return of Berlin (Pedro Alonso).

However, undoubtedly the biggest talking point from the promo is the fate of The Professor and what his role will be in the final season.

This is because right away in season five, it looks like he’s going to be found out by Alicia (Najwa Nimri).

The trailer reveals Alicia has tracked down the Professor’s hiding spot, bursting in with a gun in hand.

As the Professor tries to escape, Alicia shoots, stopping him in his tracks before she issues the chilling warning: “Check, mate.”

She then clobbers him with her handgun before tying the Professor up in chains, rendering him useless to the gang’s escape efforts.

And before long, Lisbon and those inside the bank soon discover Alicia has caught the gang’s leader.

“Lisbon to Professor,” Lisbon says over her radio, only to be deeply disturbed by Alicia’s reply: “Hi Lisbon.”

The Professor then admits: “The stormwater tank has been discovered. It’s possible this is the last time I’ll speak to all of you.”

Tokyo is on the verge of tears after hearing the Professor’s admission and the pain doesn’t stop there for the gang’s boss.

Throughout the trailer, the Professor is shown in the clip being tortured by Alicia – but will it result in him giving his team up?

Or given this is the final ever series, could the Professor be willing to die in order to give the gang a fighting chance of making it out alive?

The promo certainly drops a number of hints to suggest this fate may be destined for the Professor – and he did little to stifle speculation on his Instagram.

Sharing a snap of the season five key art which features all the gang members bar him, More captioned: “But…. Wait a minute!! WHERE’S THE PROFESSOR?”

Could the action-packed trailer be hinting at the Professor’s demise and thus, Lisbon having to lead the way for the gang’s final outing?

Money Heist season 5, volume 1 premieres on Netflix on September 3.
