Drug lord Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) still has enemies on all sides in the gripping fifth and final season of Queen of the South. With just seven episodes left of the popular USA Network drama, could Kelly Anne Van Awken (Molly Burnett) be forced to reveal another devastating secret?

Viewers are still convinced Kelly Anne Van Awken is trying to take down Teresa Mendoza’s drug empire from the inside.

The Queenpin expanded her operations to New Orleans in season four, and reluctantly allowed Kelly Anne back into the fold.

Thought to have been killed at the end of season three, it was eventually revealed James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) decided to spare her life after she was first exposed as a spy.

However, recent speculation from fans has suggested the former mole could still have plenty of reasons to dismantle Teresa’s business.

One thoughtful viewer took to Reddit with an in-depth look at Kelly Anne’s potential fall from grace in the ongoing final instalment.

User AdGullible1 posted: “No one expects it anymore and people are expecting a smart person but it would make a lot more sense if that person acts a little bit stupid so you don’t look suspicious.

“Maybe she became an addict because this life is way too much for her.

“She doesn’t fit in this world and sometimes I have the feeling she doesn’t know who she really is and still have to explore herself.”

Even after rejoining Teresa in season five, Kelly Anne still feels in over her head when it comes to the more violent aspects of the south’s drug trafficking ring.

Although she has since started a relationship with Teresa’s trusted sicario Pote (Hemky Madera), the newly pregnant Kelly Anne could still be looking for a way out of her new life.

This speculation also hit upon a number of suspicious points from her original comeback at the start of season four.

The same fan also maintained her story to convince Teresa to trust her again doesn’t quite add up.

They explained: “After she was busted and after she explained the story of what happened between her and Devon no one or nothing confirmed that story it were just her own words.”

Plus, as the series is assumed to have only taken place over a few short years, Kelly Anne’s trajectory from unassuming trophy wife to a major player in Teresa’s business could be a huge red flag.

While it may be unsatisfying for the series to pull the same trick twice, this fan insists there’s really no other explanation for such a quick rise through the ranks.

Finally, they theorised: “Maybe she became an addict because this life is way too much for her?”

“She doesn’t fit in this world and sometimes I have the feeling she doesn’t know who she really is and still have to explore herself.”

Another viewer commented and reminded viewers of Kelly Anne’s breakdown in the last episode, as the recent discovery of her pregnancy caused her to worry about what sort of mother she might be.

Having gone to great lengths to hide her pregnancy from Teresa, she may already be aware she has a big storm coming to her and is already making preparations to find a way out.

Queen of the South season 5 continues Wednesday, April 28 on USA Network.
