Kattan says he started feeling pain around his neck nearly a year later, adding that he had told executive producer Lorne Michaels and producer Ken Aymong about the matter.
AceShowbiz –Chris Kattan has revealed a secret he has been keeping for 18 years. The former cast member of “Saturday Night Live” claims that he broke his neck during a sketch on the show back in 2001, which left him almost paralyzed.
Kattan reveals in his new memoir “Baby Don’t Hurt: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live”, which is obtained by Variety prior to its May 7 release, that the incident took place during the NBC comedy show’s May 12, 2001 episode. During the said episode, he says that he fell back in a rickety chair during a skit about a group of kids who role-play as the “Golden Girls”. He landed hard on the stage and painfully hit his head.
Kattan continues saying that he started feeling the aftermath of the incident in the form of pain around his neck nearly a year later. He claims that he told “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels and producer Ken Aymong about the matter, and Aymong promised to “take care of it.” Meanwhile, Michaels allegedly gave him doctor recommendation. The injury led Kattan to undego five surgeries with two of them being paid by NBC.
The “Hotel Transylvania 2” voice actor reveals in the book that he regretted for not speaking up about the injury sooner “as opposed to being quiet because I thought it would get in the way of work.” He wrote, “As a physical comedian, I had always been worried about waking up with a whole different body one day. That fear became my reality. After those forty-five seconds on the ‘SNL’ stage in May of 2001, my body would never, ever be the same.”
The comedian first revealed about his injury when he appeared on “Dancing with the Stars” back in 2017 when he explained why he looked stiff while performing. However, it is the first time for him to say that he sustained the injury during his stint on “SNL”.
Meanwhile, several insiders for the show allegedly couldn’t recall Kattan’s injury even after they contacted other co-workers to see if they remembered it. Additionally, an NBC spokesperson claimed that the network had no record of any injury claim.
