A teasing scene in EastEnders tonight foreshadowed the downfall of killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) as he sombrely reflected that the truth always comes out in the end – referring to his guilty secret that he murdered his abused wife Chantelle.
Gray has been struggling to hold things together since he covered up the killing of Chantelle and this manifested itself in an outburst at court which put Whitney Dean’s (Shona McGarty) fate in jeopardy.
As her trial continued to fall apart with key witness Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) collapsing with a panic attack on the stand, Whitney declared to a horrified Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) that she was going to plead guilty.
Sonia found a wrecked looking Gray in the cafe and implored him to talk some sense into Sonia and to give her some much needed advice as it’s her last day in court tomorrow before the jury retires.
Gray later approached Whitney and urged her to stand up for herself and tell the truth – telling her that it always comes out in the end.
As his eyes glazed over upon saying this, it’s clear that he was weighing up his own options and the knowledge that he won’t get away with murder.
Is this the beginning of the end for him? As he heads over the edge, is he about to make a huge confession?
