Baker John Whaite, 32, performed an emotional Couple’s Choice routine alongside Johannes before turning up the heat with an upbeat jive. The Strictly Come Dancing judges were impressed with both performances but, with only four couples left, the two found themselves in the dance-off for the first time. Speaking to Zoe Ball on Monday morning, the duo, who ended up getting through to this week’s final, admitted there was a small clash over their dance-off choice and John challenged Johannes’ decision.
On his reaction to being in the final, John commented: “I can’t believe it, it hasn’t sunk in.”
He continued: “If someone told me that I’d be in the final of Strictly a year ago, two years ago, I’d have thought they were having a laugh.
“I’m just so happy that we get to do three more dances, we’re going to do two of our favourite dances and it’s just going to be incredible.”
Speaking on Radio 2, Zoe addressed the fact that the couple had found themselves in the dance-off for the first time.
Johannes was asked if he knew John had it in him to get through.
“I definitely did,” he replied. “I knew he had the higher power.
“Because I was suggesting that we do our Couple’s Choice, and he turned around and said ‘Johannes, no, we’re going to do that jive again, I’ve never felt so alive’
“And I knew that it’s right, and I said you know what, whatever happens at least he’s happy and that has been my goal for this season, to make sure that John has enjoyed this.”
Zoe pointed out: “Saturday night, there were 22 10s in scores.
“That is the most in a Strictly semi-final ever. I mean everybody properly wowed us.
“But, last night John, your first-ever dance-off. You only had to do it once, brilliant, done, in the final – it doesn’t matter.
“But you did say you were kind of expecting it.”
“I was expecting it,” the former Great British Bake Off star admitted.
“I was expecting it, I don’t know why, I just knew on Friday when we were doing rehearsals, I just knew I was going to be in the dance-off.
“I was completely at peace with it because I didn’t expect to get to the semi-finals, let alone get to the finals.
“So, when we got the opportunity to do the dance-offs, I didn’t recognise myself – I danced like I’ve never danced before and I don’t know why, and I hope I can dance like that again this weekend because it was great.”
The two confirmed they were both “excited” for the final show.
Johannes teased that the show dance on Saturday will be “a spectacle.”
John and Johannes will be competing for the Glitterball against Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice and AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
