Alex Jones stepped down from her role on The One Show earlier this month as she prepared for the birth of her third child with husband Charlie Thompson. The Welsh presenter has hosted the BBC magazine show for over 10 years and admitted she “felt trapped” when she opened up about previous employment in a recent interview.

The BBC presenter joined Angela Scanlon on her Thanks A Million podcast.

Alex opened up on “hating” her temp job at British Gas and how this experience inspired her to find something she loved.

She began: “I hated it and I never knew that so many people were so desperate for five o’clock to come on a Friday and it kind of taught me, really quickly that, you need to pull out all the stops here to find a job that doesn’t make you feel like this.

“And looking back, I mean, it wasn’t a big moment, but I think that job was more important, in terms of spurring me on and being the one that made me think, ‘Right, I don’t want to do a job like this.”

“’I don’t want to work in an office, I don’t want to be somebody faceless in an office,’” she continued.

“And it is great for lots of people, lots of people love it. But I felt trapped, I thought, this every day, the same desk, what?

“And so I think that really taught me that I needed to push myself and find something.

“As my mum would say, you’re going to be working a long time, so find something that you love to do.”

The One Show presenter went on to detail the time she missed out on interviewing Angelina Jolie because her ex-boyfriend lied and took the job.

Alex explained: “He moved to London and started working in London. So did I, I was recruited, believe it or not, on a show called Rise, which I don’t know whether you remember, it was a breakfast show on Channel 4 and I became the entertainment correspondent. I did all these junkets with film stars.

“So every Thursday I would come to London and then I would do Thursday and Friday with them and stay for the weekend.

“I must have been about 25 by this point and one day I was in Topshop on Oxford Street and the production company who made the show called the flat where we lived and said, ‘We need to speak to Alex.”

“’Angelina Jolie is available for an interview and we need her to come and do it now,’” she said.

“And he said, ‘Oh Alex is ill and she actually in Wales, but I could come.’”

Alex revealed she returned to the flat not knowing where her boyfriend was so decided to drive back to Cardiff.

The TV presenter then received a call from the production company explaining what had happened.

“They were like, ‘We’ve got a bit of a situation. Tomorrow morning your boyfriend is going to the premiere with Angelina Jolie and it would be really funny if you came on the line, live on the show and surprise him and said that you know exactly what he’s been up to,’” Alex remarked.

“So again, I said yes, so on live telly I’m like, ‘You lied to me, where have you been?’”

“So yeah, not surprisingly, we split up live on telly,” Alex concluded.

Meanwhile, the BBC presenter has confirmed she gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday.

The One Show returns to BBC One on Tuesday at 7pm. Listen to Thanks A Million with Angela Scanlon on Apple, Spotify and all podcast providers.
