The Spanish Princess on Starz: Who is in the cast of The Spanish Princess?

The Spanish Princess, episode one premieres tonight on Starz at 8pm. The episode will be available shortly afterwards in the UK on Starzplay on Amazon Prime Video. The series follows the early years of Catherine of Aragon, who went on to become the first wife of Henry VIII of England.

Who is in the cast of The Spanish Princess?

Catherine of Aragon – Charlotte Hope

Charlotte Hope portrays Catherine of Aragon in The Spanish Princess.

Catherine of Aragon became Princess of Wales after her marriage to Prince Arthur of Wales, before becoming Queen of England from June 1509 until May 1533.

She was the first wife of King Henry VIII, Arthur’s younger brother.

Speaking exclusively to, executive producer Matthew Graham explained: “For Catherine, we looked actors from Spain, from England, America, Australia, Italy and Denmark and we made a decision that the best person for the job would get the job.

“It was obviously also important if possible she could look like Catherine and it was really nice because Charlotte bears a striking resemblance to Catherine.

“Catherine had very pale skin, blue eyes and auburn hair because she had English blood in her from John of Gaunt. She [Charlotte] she brought a real fire, passion and vulnerability all at the same time you wouldn’t mess with her but also you could feel for her and empathise with her.”

Executive producer Emma Forst added: “We were drawn to that, she was very likeable as well. Charlotte has this very likeable quality on screen.”

Hope previously starred in Game of Thrones as Myranda and Philippa Hawking in the Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything.

Lina de Cardonnes – Stephanie Levi-John

Stephanie Levi-John plays Lina de Cardonnes, one of Catherine of Aragon’s ladies in waiting.

Lina de Cardonnes may be based on Cataline de Cardonnes, who served Catherine of Aragon for 26 years as Lady of the Bedchamber.

Levi-John has previously starred in Striking Out and Diversion.

Speaking exclusively to, Levi-John said: “The beautiful thing about the writing is that it really shows how multi-faceted she is because can you imagine in that time, even now, it must be really difficult to leave everything you know behind to move to a different location. Can you imagine at that time where she is really the ‘other’?

“It is truly amazing that this story is being brought to the forefront because it’s true, it’s just never spoken about. People seem to believe that black people and people of colour just popped up in random eras of history but no, we have been around and we had a place in court.

“It was beautiful seeing myself as a black woman within this so that was the first thing that really got me. I genuinely never thought I’d be in a drama like this, in a costume drama, I never thought there would be a space for me, so that was the thing.

“Not only that, she is a woman of nobility, she is elegant, she is fierce, you don’t want to mess with her. She does it in the most eloquent and elegant way and I saw myself in her essentially. “

Rosa – Nadia Parkes

Nadia Parkes plays Rosa in The Spanish Princess.

Rosa is another member of Catherine’s entourage and travels with her to England.

Following a successful careering theatre, The Spanish Princess is Parkes first major TV acting role.

Maggie Pole – Laura Carmichael

Laura Carmichael stars as Maggie Pole in The Spanish Princess.

Maggie Pole, officially known as Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, was an English peeress and one of the few surviving members of the Plantagenet dynasty.

Carmichael is best known for playing Lady Edith Crawley in Downtown Abbey.

Henry VIII of England/ Prince Harry – Ruairi O’Connor

Ruairi O’Connor plays Henry VIII of England in The Spanish Princess.

He is one of Britain’s most known monarchs, famous for his six marriages and the English Reformation.

Ruairi O’Connor’s previous credits include Handsome Devil, The Postcard Killings and Teen Spirit.

Arthur, Prince of Wales – Angus Imrie

Angus Imrie stars as Prince Arthur of Wales in The Spanish Princess.

Prince Arthur was Catherine’s first husband but sadly died six months later.

Imrie is best known for playing Josh Archer in the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers and Jake in Fleabag.
