The Walking Dead fans stunned as they spot 'endless zombie loop' easter egg spanning 15 years

THE Walking Dead has impressed fans with an easter egg 15 years in the making.

As fans will know, the AMC zombie drama is based upon the comics by Robert Kirkman, with the scripts broadly following the stories laid out the by author, with a few notable exceptions.

The comics drew to a close last year, leaving many worried about the future of the show, although execs were quick to point out that the it could well outlive the graphic novels.

In the first issue, a horde of zombies are seen reaching outwards, with the figure on the far left of the cover completely cut out, aside from an ear.

However, now fans have noticed an impressive feat of continuity pulled off by Kirkman on the covers of his first and last comic issues.

It turns out that the zombie group featured on the last cover join up perfectly with this image if laid side, with the ear becoming part of the largest zombie head.

One fan was so impressed with the gesture that he tweeted Robert Kirkman to congratulate him.

He captioned the picture: "Oh my God you inspired me to check if the last volume loops back into the first volume and it DOES!

"It is an endless zombie loop spanning 15 years of art!! @RobertKirkman am I the first to discover this?!"

Kirkman confirmed that he'd been eagerly waiting for someone to point the easter egg out.

Retweeting the message, he replied: "You may actually be the first to notice this. I was always wondering when someone would. Nice work!"

It wasn't long before other fans come forward with their own theories in the comments section about the signifcance of the image.

One pointed out that every single cover featuring a row of zombies matched up when placed alongside each other.

"So it’s not a 'line' of Walkers…it’s a circle… We’re surrounded," one wrote.

A second joked: "You did this so people have to perpetually keep buying the books to continue the picture, didn’t you Kirkman?? And I thought your coloured re-release was evil… this is next level!!"

Meanwhile a third noticed that the pair of zombies on the cover resemble Kirkman and artist partner-in-crime Charlie Adlard.

The duo have worked on the series for almost two decades, so what better way to conmemorate their bromance?

At the time the comics were cancelled, AMC bosses admitted they were given minimal notice and had been caught off guard by the announcement.
