Virgin River season three dropped plenty of bombshells and it continues to hold a place in the Netflix top 10. The uplifting drama provided many light and dark moments in the latest season, including a break-up between Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). At the end of the third outing, Mel announced she was pregnant, but she was unsure of who the father was.
Is Mel’s baby Jack’s or Mark’s?
Virgin River season three did not hold back when it came to dropping huge plot twists, and fans were left on the edge of their seats.
Mel and Jack ended up parting ways as Mel had asked whether Jack was prepared to try for a baby with her.
Already overwhelmed at the prospect of becoming a father to Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) twins, Jack was reluctant to agree.
He told her he felt they should end their relationship as he did not want to deny her something she wanted so desperately.
Mel was heartbroken and went back to visit her sister in LA for what seemed to be a few days.
When she returned, Jack had realised he had made a mistake and he begged Mel to take him back.
From there, their relationship seemed to be back on track, with Jack even planning to propose to Mel.
However, Mel had not told him that whilst she was out of town, she visited her old fertility clinic.
She had her late husband Mark (Daniel Gillies) had banked some of his sperm in case they were able to try for a second child.
Mel considered using fertility treatment so she could have Mark’s baby again and let his memory live on.
However, fans were left wondering who the father of the baby was as Mel found out she was pregnant after she got back.
As viewers did not see what happened whilst Mel was away from Virgin River, it is difficult to analyse the timeline of events.
The probability of the baby belonging to Jack is seemingly higher, but the creators of the series may want to add some drama.
With this in mind, fans could discover the baby is Mark’s, putting Jack in an even trickier position.
Will he be able to connect with Mel’s child knowing he is not the real father? This remains to be seen.
Although, this would be the perfect way for Jack to prove himself as a committed partner and future husband.
Jack actor Henderson spoke to TV Line about what the massive bombshell meant to his character.
He said: “Because it was at the end of the episode and the season, we didn’t really get a chance for the characters to explore what that information will do to them.
“We’ll save that for a potential season four, but it’s a very effective cliffhanger.
“It’s nice and juicy, but it’s a big pill to swallow. She left town for, like, a day or two, so it was rather unexpected to say the least.
“But just like Jack getting shot, it’s one more big question mark hanging over these characters.”
Considering this, it seems less likely the baby is Mark’s, as it could be that Mel was already pregnant but did not realise.
She had not taken any pregnancy tests on-screen, so she could have been none the wiser the whole time.
Mark tragically died before the events of the series as he was in a tragic car accident.
He and Mel had lost their first baby during childbirth, and it drove a wedge between them until the end.
Virgin River season 3 is on Netflix now.
