Y:1883 is an upcoming prequel series to the popular melodrama, Yellowstone, on the Paramount Network. News of the new Paramount Plus prequel came to light in February 2021 and it was followed by news of a Yellowstone spin-off. Taylor Sheridan has opened up about what fans can expect from the new prequel series.
Where does Y:1883 fit in the Yellowstone timeline?
Yellowstone fans were thrilled to hear the series would be getting a prequel which would give insight into the origins of the Dutton family.
The series, which should air later in 2021, comes as part of a huge deal between Sheridan and ViacomCBS.
Fans will learn of how the Duttons ended up in Montana and the story will reveal how they came to settle there.
Sheridan has just taken part in an interview with Paramount Plus to explain the thought process behind the expanding universe.
This prequel series will take place before the events of Yellowstone, so none of the original cast will be featuring.
Sheridan said: “I was always fascinated when I came up with the story of Yellowstone, about how do we make it bigger and how do we expand it?
“This new show explores different eras of that 130-year legacy, what an opportunity to witness the first Duttons to come to Montana.
“We see them when they were homesteading. When we say the ‘Wild West’, what that really means is a West beyond the reach of the rule of law.
“It really is the beginning of an empire before it was an empire.”
Fans commented on the video interview and expressed their excitement ahead of the new series.
One said: “Taylor Sheridan is one of the best writers in Hollywood right now, I look for everything he does.”
Meanwhile, another said: “I mean this is the future with these series, being able to do movie quality stories made for television, it’s a great model and it works just fine.”
The video included some behind the scenes footage and fans have already seen a short teaser.
The original Yellowstone cast took to social media at the time of the announcement to share their thoughts.
Jimmy Hardstrom actor Jefferson White said: “Incredible. Cannot wait.” Meanwhile, Governor Lynelle Perry actress Wendy Moniz said: “Yessssss!!!!”

Fans have rewatched the teaser and they are keen to know who the mysterious voice belongs to.
The voice is heard saying: “I don’t care if you live or die. But should you live, you tell them about me.”
The character behind the voice is likely to be an ancestor of John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) who could have been the one to settle at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
Outsider.com has suggested it is John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather speaking in the teaser.
Tate actor Brecken Merrill shared the trailer on Instagram, saying: “Every story has its beginning.”
Paramount Plus responded with: “We can’t wait to tell this incredible story!”
Yellowstone season four has already been filmed and fans will hopefully be treated to new episodes this summer.
The season three finale saw the Dutton family face death when each member was targeted by anonymous killers.
With the cliffhangers still looming, viewers are keen to know which of the Duttons survives.
Yellowstone airs on Paramount Network.
