Virgin River returned to Netflix earlier this month but Paige (played by Lexa Doig) was missing from the series. Her disappearance is linked to how the second season ended, following the drama with her abusive ex-husband Wes (Steve Bacic). But why did the Canadian actor leave Virgin River after just two series?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Virgin River.
Why did Steve Bacic leave Virgin River as Wes?
In the second series, Preacher (Colin Lawrence) finds out that Paige is running away from her past as he sees her driving license has the name “Michelle” on it.
This was so she could run away from her ex-husband Wes who, before she arrived in Virgin River, filed a restraining order against her.
This was to trick the police into thinking that she was in fact the abusive partner in the relationship.
Unfortunately for her and son Christopher, Wes was able to track them down and moved into their new home.
By the end of the series, Wes wants to leave the area but Paige refuses to comply.
When she goes against him, Wes chokes her and attempts to go and get Christopher.
In an act of self-defence, Paige pushes him away, causing Wes to fall down the stairs to his death.
Paige fled shortly after as she didn’t want to potentially be sent to prison for his murder, despite Preacher helping to get rid of the body.
Actor Bacic hasn’t spoken out about his departure from Virgin River.
But as his character Wes is killed off in the original Virgin River books written by author Robyn Carr, he probably already knew he wasn’t going to be in it for the long haul.
Wes’ death had already been planned prior to Bacic starting in the drama so it was because of the storyline that Bacic left the series.
There is still more to come from this plot though as Wes’ brother Vince is on the scene.

At the end of series three, Vince has arrived in town looking for his brother and threatened to hurt Paige when he sees her.
There is also the matter of Paige’s “friend” who gives Preacher a message that she wants to see her son Christopher.
The friend takes him to the woods but gives him a drink just before which was apparently drugged as he collapsed.
But could this really be the end of Preacher or will someone rescue him?
Virgin River will be back for season four after Netflix announced the drama’s renewal.
So far, a release date hasn’t been announced for the next series.
However, given the fact season three has only just come out, it seems more likely that season four is going to arrive sometime next year.
Virgin River is available to watch on Netflix.
