The official cast list for the next instalment of Paramount’s hit Western series has finally been revealed and fans are excited to see some huge names joining the show. Among them is returning guest star Will Patton, whose appearance in Yellowstone season three sparked several theories about the shooting of John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner).

Will Patton is officially returning as the biological father of Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Garrett Randall in the highly anticipated fourth season of Yellowstone.

His return could be the first step in determining who tried to take down Jamie’s adoptive father and ranch owner John Dutton at the end of the last instalment.

During their meeting near the end of season three, Randall urges Jamie to ‘kill the king’ in order to take back control of his life following the revelation he had been adopted.

The solitary ex-convict also admitted to killing Jamie’s mother when he was just a child after realising the extent of her drug habit.

Randall’s murderous tendencies sent up red flags within the Yellowstone fanbase, with many believing he could have something to do with the attempt made on John Dutton’s life.

Now, exclusive details from Deadline’s report of Patton’s return in season four suggest those theories could very well hold water.

Their latest insight confirms Patton has signed on as a series regular for the forthcoming outing, hitting screens this autumn.

They also described his character as ‘a man with a murderous past’, echoing his advice for Jamie to take down his father and take control of the ranch.

As Jamie becomes further estranged from his adoptive family, Randall’s frequent appearances suggest they’ll form a closer relationship next season.

However, Jamie will have to come to terms with his father’s dark past, which may have resurfaced in the present day.

Although John’s shooter in the season three finale didn’t appear to be Garrett Randall, some viewers are still convinced he had a hand in organising the attacks.

Whether he was the mastermind behind the attacks on Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) is still to be determined.

Still, his ominous talk with Jamie had some fans thinking he knew more than he was letting on.

There’s also the possibility that the black sheep of the Dutton’s orchestrated the attacks himself after learning he had been lied to his entire life.

While John and the ranch had been combating the advances of Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway), Jamie certainly has the motive and resources to try and take down his family from the inside.

Whatever the case, showrunner Taylor Sheridan is poised to reveal much more about Jamie’s estranged father as the series progresses, with Patton tipped to appear in the majority of the next ten episodes.

Meanwhile, more will also be revealed about the past of ranch manager Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), as young star Finn Little is onboard to portray a younger version of the character, also as series regular.

Deadline has also reported Oscar-nominee Jacki Weaver has joined the fourth season of Yellowstone as a recurring cast member.

Weaver is set to play Caroline Warner, the CEO of Market Equities, the company that has been a thorn in the side of the Yellowstone ranch throughout season three.

Finally, Piper Perabo (Angel Has Fallen) and Kathryn Kelly (Nashville) will also play recurring roles in the new season.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in autumn 2021 on Paramount.
