A DISABLED couple say they had to live in a public toilet after being turned down for council accommodation.
Thomas Vinall, 75, and wheelchair-bound wife Kathleen, 70, were evicted after a month in the loos in Sheerness, Kent, and now bed down in their old Ford Focus.
Before that, they had emergency housing from Swale Borough Council.
Stroke victim Thomas, from East London, said they could not afford to rent privately.
Kathleen, of Portsmouth, said: “We were offered one place which had 30 steps but I couldn’t climb them.”
The council said that, despite not having an obligation, they found accommodation for them after their landlord repossessed their home in 2014 — but they were then asked to leave it.
Mrs Vinall has been offered residential care.
