Pokemon fans queue up for opening of temporary Westfield London shop

Gotta Catch ‘Em All! Hundreds of Pokemon fans queue up for opening of temporary London pop-up shop amid reports of ‘increased spawning in the area’

  • Europe’s only Pokémon Centre has opened in Westfield in west London
  • Fans queued to snap exclusive UK-inspired toys and to try out the new Sword and Shield games
  • The area also became a hot spot for Pokemon Go! character spawnings
  • The store is set to close in November on the day the new game is released

Thousands of shoppers have flocked to a London shopping centre as the doors open on the UK’s ever Pokémon Centre – but it is only open for a month.

Queues stretched down the main concourse of Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush, with fans of the video game franchise waiting excitedly to get their hands on exclusive merchandise.

The store is the only official Pokémon Center in Europe, and was opened to celebrate the launch of the new Pokémon Sword and Shield games, which uses a game map inspired by the UK.

A previous game had been inspired by France, which is the only other time a Pokémon Center has come to Europe.

Some guests – queuing for hours – dressed as their favourite Pokémon pocket-monsters, while others noticed an increased spawning of Pokémon Go characters

As the doors opened, fans were greeted by the bowler hat-wearing Pikachu costume character, the official ‘face’ of the store and one of the huge variety of products quickly snapped up from the shelves.

Curiously, there were very few items actually related to Shield and Sword games except some hoodies emblazoned with new Pokémon Sobble, Grookey, and Scorbunny.

The store had also created an upstairs area where visitor could demo each of the new games.

Pokémon’s Westfield centre is open from today through to November 15, when the new Sword and Shield games become available

The most expensive item on display was a giant plush Pikachu, which a Pokémon Youtuber bought for a whopping £240.

The Pokémon fan craze – now in its 23rd year – is still a serious business, with staff claiming that their Paris pop-up store sold out of all its merchandise within five days.
