A police officer is among six people who have been shot dead in a shootout at a kosher supermarket which now appears to have been targeted.
The shooters, reported to be a man and woman dressed in black, pulled up outside the JC Kosher Supermarket in Jersey City, New Jersey, in a rented U-Haul van on Tuesday afternoon, before going inside and opening fire.
A ferocious gun battle between police and the suspects then erupted, leaving the shooters dead in the gunfire, as well as three people inside the supermarket, The New York Times reported.
The shooting was initially reported as a police sting or drug deal gone wrong, but Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has since tweeted that the deli appears to have been specifically targeted. Police have refused to say whether the massacre may have been an anti-Semitic hate attack, and the suspects have not yet been identified.
Police, FBI agents, SWAT teams and officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and explosives (ATF) rushed to the scene, with SWAT teams eventually storming the store and killing both shooters.
Specialist police officers from the New York City Police Department also rushed from neighboring New York City to help their New Jersey colleagues.
Police reported that at least one person is believed to be injured inside the store, and was spotted close to its door.
President Trump is also reported to have been briefed on the shooting.
Ferocious gunfire can be heard in multiple videos shared from the scene, with specialist officers from the neighboring New York Police Department drafted in to help out.
NJ.com reported that one police officer was heard saying that each time their colleagues advance towards the shooter, they are fired at from a window.
All schools in the area have been put on lockdown, with some New Jersey Transit bus and rail services also suspended.
One dramatic amateur surveillance clip showed a row of armed policemen advancing on the scene while shouting at pedestrians to take cover.
And a third video recorded even louder gunfire ringing out from the store shortly after the shooting began.
SWAT teams are responding to the shooting, and 12 local schools have been locked down.
