PAEDOPHILE sex gang fantasist Carl Beech received almost £200,000 in legal aid in his bid to dodge justice — and could get even more for a planned appeal.
Beech’s lies about a VIP paedophile ring sparked a £2million Scotland Yard probe and left taxpayers facing the six-figure bills to pay for the lawyers who argued his case.
The 51-year-old was convicted of perverting justice, fraud and skipping bail and was jailed for 18 years last month.
He had falsely accused senior public figures including former PM Sir Edward Heath and ex-Tory MP Harvey Proctor of belonging to a murderous child sex gang in the late 1970s and early 80s.
Beech — awarded £186,598.24 in publicly-funded legal support — could be in line for more after it was revealed he is planning appeals.
The grounds remained unclear last night.
A legal source said: “The going rate for a top Queen’s Counsel is £500 an hour. The fact he’s appealing against his conviction and sentence will take considerable court time.
“But appealing against his sentence is high-risk and could lead to more jail time rather than less.”
A judge will rule on Beech’s application later.
